we all know that we want the whale on our right so we can act after him
but if that whale is an out and out manaic isnt having him on your left a great idea

reason in my thinking is pot building

reason being if your on his left and he makes a play at pot and you have a strong hand you give the rest of the table that info and therefore they get out the way

but if you are on his right and you check to him on the flop other players can see this as weakness and come into the pot with alot less than they would normally thus building the pot for you when you show your strengh even committing some people to a pot they wouldnt have been in if it wasn't for the whale

comments please

I always thought you wanted maniacs to your left for this reason and tight ABC players to your right so you didn't walk into them with a hand...

i do agree with u in some ways. But and thats a big But with the whale you know you proberly have him beaten but you could then be letting other players in the pot to out draw you i personaly would rather be up against the whale then another strong player unless i have a very powerful hand.

pre flop I have always wanted to be on maniac's left.....that way if he's a serial raiser with not a lot and I find a hand I have a range of options, and if I choose to re-raise the pot has been built for me

Couple of nights ago I had nutter two to my left, he would raise at least twice a round. I caught AQ suited and raised, he goes all-in over the top of me, covering me (to be fair, that's how he got the chips to bully).. I have to lay it down..as he said as he showed 62 off..."you can only call me with AA". Not strictly true but I got the message. Another player raises, he goes all in, gets a call from AJ and shows AA himself....a dangerous customer

post flop I think I agree with you..if you have got to that stage you can set up check raises and the like by being the other side of him.

i would want him on my right so i can keep an eye on him, as for others in the pot...why?
It's better to get him headsup cuz maniacs tend to play silly hands, if you check and someone on your left raises then the maniac will probably call for value anyway.
The worse thing IMO is having someone who is unpredictable after me.
Just my bit,

Interesting point Ironside, I think you might be onto something. The people you want to your left are people that you don't need info on such as total Rocks who are 90%+ likely to pass and, come to think about it, out and out maniacs who raise 90%+. you want tricky, better players to your right because you have to gain any advantage you can on them and position is a big weapon against strong players. The Maniac doesn't care if you raise him, they're all going in. a check raise all-in is yuor only effective weapon against a maniac, take the RRR off him.

no, you're right but if he is going to bet most things post flop anyway then it might be one of the rare examples when being out of position is a help, if you have a hand that's worth check raising

If you are an agressive player in a timid game, you'd want this player to sit on your left so you can beat him into the pot. From my experience, it's hard to bully a table when someone to your right is getting in be4 you each time.

During the last blonder tourney the camel was on my right. Steal blinds? not a chance. Keep my blind? not a chance.

Sit back and wonder what on earth I could do? I did that a lot, didn't manage to come to an answer.
