I just thought for a bit of fun I would try a game of Horse, although I had heard of it I had no idea what to do. I was doing ok, but then ended up in a reraise battle with a guy and i had a King high full house. The guy asked if I knew what i was doing. I replied of course i do, do you know what you are doing? He promptly beat my full house with eight high. he then explained that as it was razz that the lowest hand wins. I laughed but said i would get my chips back. The next hand I had seven high and again had a reraise battle. This time I lost all of my chips to a pair of aces. Turns out this hand wasn't on razz.
Can anyone tell me the basics of Horse or is this posted elsewhere?

you play one level hold-em then one level Omaha hi/lo then a level razz then a level stud then a level stud hi/lo then you go back to the beginning
normally horse is limit but some places the final table is all NLHE

normally a level on line is about 15 minutes

Haha, I did the same thing last night on Full Tilt! Didn't notice the game had switched from 7CS to Razz and I capped QQQ77 on all streets  >:?

Brilliant!

The only places online that do it (that I'm aware of are Full Tilt and Bugsys... I haven't played on Bugsys, but Full Tilt alternates each game as the levels go up - and unlike the WSOP, the final table doesn't switch to No Limit Hold'Em. Wink

I like it, as a refreshing change from the usual... although I have a nasty habit of finishing 4th in HORSE Stts...

It's important to know the order the games are in, and be aware of the level-ups, especially during the stud variations, which do look very similar - so as to avoid mistakes like these (i.e. betting high hands on razz, or low hands on 7cs).

Full Tilt always does the different games in the order that the acronym suggests:

Hold'Em
Omaha Hi Lo
Razz
Seven Card Stud
Eight-or-better Seven Card Stud (a.k.a. Seven Card Stud Hi Lo)

...and then back to Hold'Em again.

There are two ways to make sure that the stud variation you're playing is the right one:

1) Recognise the amount of the antes and bring in - as soon as they go up, you're on a new level and have therefore moved to the next game on the list

2) Recognise which card brings in - is it the highest card or the lowest card?

This is because Razz brings in on the highest card, but seven card stud brings in on the lowest card; this is also the level change that is most likely to lose you a pot (as 7cs to 7cs Hi Lo might not kill you if you bet a high hand, but betting a razz hand in 7cs will certainly lose you chips!)

If you're playing razz, and suddenly the lowest card brings in - check to see which level you're on, you're not playing razz any more!
