According to the trainline.com your bets option is Donny to Kings Cross then Kings Cross to Luton Airport, about 2hrs 30.

If there was any particular area in the north from where you were travelling, then a search at www.nationalrail.co.uk, using the name of the station you were travelling from, would tell you when the trains run to Luton Airport.

Accessible train times:

http://traintimes.org.uk/kettering/luton/10:15/

You can replace the place names to suit your journey, the one above would give you times from Kettering to Luton, leaving at the next 10:15 (which would now be tomorrow).

You can add other 'natural text' - so you could find the journey times for 'this wednesday' or 'next wednesday':

http://traintimes.org.uk/kettering/luton/10:15/next%20wednesday

Anyway, just thought I'd share.  Tikay'll like it anyway....

The Station to search for is "Luton Airport Parkway", not to be confused with "Luton".

It's served by Midland Mainline, & Thameslink.

Luton Station is pretty naff, no character, & not much in the way of intersting rolling stock to ogle.

Luton Airport Parkway is a modern, rather dull, concrete edifice, with little to recommend it.

As an aside, Luton Airport is in my all-time Top Ten of The World's Worst Airports, right up there with Mombasa, Paris Charles De Gaulle, Bbelfast International, & the wonderfuly named YumDum International (The Gambia). Coventry is pretty abysmal, but it's kinda cute, too, so I exempt it.

It's a matter of choice. Personally, I'd try & get across to Sheffield & catch a Class 43 hauled HST down to Luton, but GNER to Kings Cross (then catch the Class 43 Midland Mainline HST backup to Luton AP)  is also a bit special GNER do a wonderful job & have great Rolling Stock, varying from EuroStar sets (leased from Porrterbrook Rail Leasing Ltd) to some terrifically evocative slam-door stock, the full range. And always spotlessly clean, unlike the Midland Mainline stock which is filthy, due, I've always suspected, to faulty carriage-washing facilities at Derby Depot.
