Just took delivery of a spanking new Acer TM 5623 notebook and can't get on the net through my wireless adsl modem/router. It's Vista Home Premium (very flash I must say) so I'm not very familiar where all 'the bits' are. I've configured my Edimax modem/router (enabled the wireless LAN, selected 128-bit WEP encryption and entered the appropriate keys.

My notebook can 'see' the network and it even says that it is 'Connected' but I cannot connect to the internet. I've disabled my notebook firewall but it makes no difference. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

I've only set a laptop wireless up for one person using Vista and had a very similar problem.

Disabled the laptop's built in wireless software and let Vista manage it. problem solved.

You'll probably have one or two wireless icons at the bottom right of the taskbar, hover the mouse over them to determine which is the laptops own, right click and you should get some options.  Try looking for an option to disable this.

Best of luck. Vista being so new (and in my view, very invasive and resource intensive), it's not an easy problem to diagnose online.

It'll be something to do with the modem/router and not the laptop I imagine.  I'd phone the helpline associated with the router, i've had problems before with things like the order I connected things up and stuff.  It was the same thing where it said connected but it wasn't.   Helpline should sort you out.

Is it a new router too or have you already had that set up?

Connect using an ethernet cable to make sure you can get online, then move to the wireless next.

Any other PCs on the network?

Thanks for your help guys - still pi55ing in the wind at the moment but it's only a matter of time before I wrestle this sucker into submission!

You're the third person to say it could be a clash between windows trying to manage the connection and Acer's own software (the other's said let the Acer software take charge though?). Trouble is, I can't see where to disable either at the moment - any (Vista-oriented) directions?

It'll be something to do with the modem/router and not the laptop I imagine.  I'd phone the helpline associated with the router, i've had problems before with things like the order I connected things up and stuff.  It was the same thing where it said connected but it wasn't.   Helpline should sort you out.

If I can't suss it in the next day or so, I'll try Acer - the router has been working fine and continues to do so but I've had the wireless disabled whilst I had no need of it. I'm fairly sure the router's okay as I set an identical model up on wireless for a neighbour.

Two other PCs cables to the router and working fine. See the comments on the wireless being disabled above.

I originally had it on WEP-128 bit but changed it to WPA-PSK with no discernible difference.

Many thanks again - I'll keep trying. Any fresh help (very very very) gratefully accepted.
