True story: I have a friend who has an account with a very well known Building Society. They applied for an upgraded VISA card rather than a cash card and were declined. On asking why, they were told that they didn't use enough cheques...so you'd be surprised at how important cheques can be.

I remember moving to the UK in '99 and standing behind someone in Tesco. I noticed them paying by cheque...I just thought WTF? I remember seeing my dad pay with them in the 80s but surely not after that.
