Any ideas on what spec / how much I need to spend on a home CCTV system.

I want two cameras watching the front of my house / car (parked on the road) approximately 2/3 car lengths from my front door.
There is a street light outside.

Have a look at Maplin website. They have some decent DVR kits for £200 to £300.

What's it for mate?

You want to see who's there from the inside when you're there?

You want to record images that you could use in court?

You want to see who's there when you're away from home?

All different aims, all different specs. Been working on a similar setup, took me ages.

Want to catch whichever scumbag has decided its a good idea to key my better half's car.
The car is parked on the road outside my house about 10-15 metres from my house.
Figure I need:-

two cameras either end of my house so I can overlap the car/garden.
A DVR to record the scumbag

If you go to Maplins you'll over pay by at least 50%

You could spend anywhere from £200 to £6k with CCTV and unless you get ripped off you pretty much get what you pay for.

We've installed single cameras ranging from £250 each up to about £3k for an all singing all dancing 1080p PTZ 35x zoom jobby.

It really comes down to how much do you want to spend?

Have you got a budget?

Most expensive home install was £20k which was for 4 cameras + all kinds of sensors and trackers.

It was a few years ago though so not HD and different to a modern system.

Modern HD cameras in the £3k range (and cheaper) have built in motion sensors based on changing pixels and also built in tracking.

There's some impressive stuff out there if you like to spend some money.

I've installed 3 of these recently for a customer: http://www.axis.com/files/datasheet/ds_q6035_q6035e_43869_en_1108_lo.pdf

Absolutely incredible quality but at £3k each I guess you'd hope so. They're so simple to install as well. Just a cat 5e cable from a router and with it being PoE it's good to go.

Be careful if you have it trained on the public road, you may be breaking the law, without signage, license etc.
