Quite an informative interview with the referee about half way down this page:

Seems like as soon as Pettersen said "We didn't concede that" and that was established to be correct, the ruling was completely straightforward.
IMO it's a bit odd that on a poker site where everyone is a stickler for the rules and where I've read "he'll know next time" on many occasions, that Petterson is made out to be a monster for applying the same standards.
Bit of a straw man you have there by claiming everybody here is a stickler for the rules. For sure some people are sticklers for the rules in poker games, others still like to do the right thing. There must be numerous threads where we have had similar arguments.
I am pretty sure I would just concede the putt, as it is pretty clear that is what the US player thought had happened, and the reality is that 95% of the time she would have sunk the putt. I am also pretty sure that many of my fellow poker players wouldn't. People live their lives different ways.

I still maintain that the captain should have intervened and had the ball replaced.
Simples.

Ralph - if you listen to the referee in the clip I linked, he says that once it is agreed that the putt wasn't conceded and no one said anything that could be construed as a concession, he can't give the option to replace the ball.

Total disgrace. Just not on. Poetic justice that the Americans won in the end.

I love Suzann.
Love a bit of edge in these things. Hate it when they're all hugging and high five-ing each other, i personally find it incredibly cringey.
One of my favorite Ryder Cup moments was at Medina in 2012. 17th hole. Justin Rose Snakes an unbelievable 40 footer, downhill with loads of left to right break. Struts across the green with his chest out as if he's hung like a shire horse. Then the camera cuts to Phil Mickleson is applauding him with his stupid little smiley face. And that stupid little smiley face is why the USA have a shocking Ryder Cup record over the last 20 years. They've lost their edge.
I've probably played about 200 games of match play golf in my life and have never, ever picked a ball up without confirmation that my opponent has conceded. Even times when i thought i've heard somebody say "take it away" i may even still mark my ball just to get the confirmation again. Couldn't think of much worse than looking to my opponent and him just staring blankly at me and not conceding, just looks weak.

Exactly the same thought occurred to me.
Thought the whole situation was hilarious tbh.

Are you suggesting that Charlie Hull didn't infer concession by walking off the green?

That's irrelevant anyway as Lee said she picked up the ball because she thought she heard someone say "its good" (and if you look at the video Hull walked towards Pettersen who appears to be standing at the edge of the green behind Lee). The referee says in the vid clip that the option to replace wasn't available.

Lincicombe has admitted shouting "don't pick up" at Lee, so that pretty much destroys the whole "walking off putt conceded" argument as she could clearly see both the Euro players and wasn't in any way under the impression that the putt had been conceded.
