thanks for the advice everyone - I guess I'll just watch for a bit and see what everyone else is doing.

You'll probably see a lot of variety in what people do, so find something you're comfortable with and stick with it.

FWIW, my 'system' is to tip for every pot I win with the lowest denomination chip in play, which is usually a $1 chip because of the rake (i.e. in a $10/20 game, they will have to break up a $5 chip in every hand for the drop).  In some low stakes games they have quarters or half dollar coins in play so you can use these if you feel a $1 chip is too big a % of the pot.  I generally don't tip for split pots or when I steal the blinds.  If I win a huge pot I probably tip 2 or 3 chips but normally I try and stick to a consistent amount regardless of the amount won.  Some players don't tip small pots and tip more for big ones but I find that this means some dealers miss out completely while others get more.  Using my method, most dealers will end up with a similar amount after their 30 minute stint.

PS: If you cash in a tournament out there you'll probably be asked to leave a tip for the dealers.  Chances are there's already been a drop taken for them (particularly in rebuy events where the add-on is normally 'for the dealers') so just be aware of how much has already been taken and don't feel pressured into tipping over the odds.

The norm is to tip $1 every time you win a pot. However, if there isn't much in the pot (maybe only the blinds) then obviously you shouldn't tip. If you win a large pot you might want to give the dealer a bit more.
In tournaments they generally withold 3% of the prize pool for tournament staff so there isn't really a need to tip on top of that unless you feel that the dealers and tournament staff had done an exceptional job.

dont worry about what everyone else is doing, if you think the dealer is a nice guy and would appreciate the extra money then tip him.

Off to Vegas for the first time in a few days and likely to be playing a few hands of cash poker whilst I'm there.  Can someone tell me the etiquette on tipping the dealers? Should I tip everytime I win a pot, or just when I win a big pot.  How much should I tip - is it a rough %age of the pot?  Also, presume tips are expected if you make the money in a tournament?  Finally, should I tip in chips or cash?

I know I sound like a stress bunny, but I worry about these things!!!!

I know this might sound tight but two friends and I worked out we had tipped around $800 playing cash games on a Vegas trip at a $1 a time and vowed between us not to tip at all on our next trip.

We got a few comments and funny looks as the whole country is seemingly hooked on tips but we simply explained that we would rather tip at the end of the dealers session and did occasionally tip at this point if the dealer had been good.

If you are playing smallish stakes cash games you should not be giving away tips as this will eat into your profit.

If you enter a tourney I thinik you can leave a tip should you win one of the higher prizes.

Just my view.

It depends i think most of us go to vegas to have a good time rather than to break the bank in a low limit cash game....profit for me in vegas is based on how much i win, and if i lose, how many free drinks did i get though......

For comps, i won an event in Binions and having realised after the dealers already had a cut i regret leaving a nice tip.
