It was just going to be a routine call.
My Windscreen had cracked on the motorway and it needed replacing so I headed for my nearest Autoglass and had the work done.
Afterwards I needed to call my insurance company to get a claim processed.
Of course no one minds if there is a short wait while a claims person becomes free...Option 1 then Option 2 on the automated menu and then a short wait
But come on, do not play me Cliff Richard's "Wired for Sound" while I am waiting!!
This company has thousands and thousnds of tunes to choose from as its "waiting music" and here I am stuck in a loop listening to Cliff for the sixth time.
Is there anything worse to be stuck listening to? Does it seriously think that its customers of all ages and backgrounds want to listen to Cliff? OK, perhaps they'd draw the line at The White Stripes or Primal Scream but this really is taking the celibate tennis loving crinkly necked biscuit.
I suppose if there's one thing guaranteed to make me put the phone down and not process the claim its Wired for sound for the sixth time. Or maybe "Mistletoe and Wine". Maybe thats the whole point.
The cynic in me imagines the conversation
Smithers "I have the new quarterly figures sir"
Burns "Oh good Smithers...Excellent excellent, claims are down 37%"
Smithers "and its directly due to Cliff. On days we use Cliff as our waiting music claims are down 63%"
Burns "Inspired Smithers, Inspired"
Smithers "Its worked so well we are going for the Frog Chorus next quarter"

It really does make you wonder. If one of our underwriters puts you on hold, we need to listen to the Top Gear theme tune - I'm guessing the car link, but even still...

Sometimes you have to suffer a little bit in your youth to motivate yourself to succeed in later life. Do you think if Bill Gates got laid in high school, do you think there'd be a Microsoft? Of course not.

Do not diss the Frog Chorus - it's the only decent thing McCartney has done in 26 years.

"Wired for sound" is actually a great song I think! Terrifically poptastic tune in an early eighties type way, mate!! I think the song unfairly gets a lot of stick because the original video for it was so cringingly awful. If you've never seen it........well....you need to think Cliff and some lycra-clad girlies, all on roller skates, gyrating their way round Milton Keynes shopping centre!! Keithy wanders off with his hands in the air........." I like tall speakers........I like small speakers "

Actually rereading this I don't know where they went wrong with the video.....it really had all the potential ingredients of a classic!!
