I saw a blokes thumb cut off by a pin-hole sized jet of hydraulic fluid

We have some of our alloys cut with water jets, i'm talking about 12" by 6" blocks of material resistant to heat, distortion etc. etc. and the water jets slice it like hot knives through butter.
Incredible technology.

Do you have any scrap?

One of our guys in the Joiners Shop somehow nailed himself to a full-sized sheet of plywood with a nail gun. We had a helluva job getting him in the ambulance, (he remained attached to the plywood) & eventualy the Fire Brigade arrived & reduced the sheet of plywood to a more manageable size. Painful experience for the poor fella.

I have done many H&S courses and the general rule is that if you are hurt in the course of doing your job the company IS responsible, they then decide to what degree.

That's abouit the size of it Ian. Even if the Operative manually over-rides the safety devices, the Employer is deemed responsible because the guy COULD.

A fella i knew who knew a fella la di da di da that got on a forklift truck he knew to be faulty, had an accident and the poor chap died.
Damages of around £100k were awarded to the family but he was deemed to be 75% responsible as he had knowingly operated a faulty truck, therefore the family got £25k.

Not legally!! Cheesy
We use highly specialised alloys, some special mixes. Stuff such as:-
titanium, hastX, inco718, waspalloy, some of these contain as much as 50% nickel.
Nickel is a very expensive material but also a highly dangerous one if not handled correctly, it's a known carcinogen actually whereas tobacco isn't!!

I was once carrying a sheet of plywood accross a yard on a windy day. Suddely a huge gust caught me and I found myself running down the middle of a main road between two cars, all three of us were doing about 40 mph.

Funny, it never occurs to you to let go...
