Ok, so I understand the football rivalry (so long as it doesn't just roll over into hating individual english born peeps for no reason), but what I don't like is that scottish people don't feel british.

After a bit of wikipedia-ing I found out that Britain was originally called Britain way before the english (angles) arrived, and that the word probably comes from describing the way native tribes painted themselves before battle. Great Britain (our whole island, different to the old roman distinctions) was used after the crumble of the roman empire as a term to distinguish it from Lesser Britain (brittany in france where they also painted themselves up).

Soooooo, anyone who lives on these islands should be proud to be British, cos that's exactly where your heritage comes from. Its certainly no english invention.

Get in there, wikipedia Wink

confused..

are parts of scotland, wales ireland and most of western europe not of the celts..watched an interesting programme on "barbarians" and the celts were unearthed.
seems as if they were a very highly evolved transient society who were more enlightened and possessed skills the romans could only dream about.
The romans of course slaughtered them and then wrote them into history as barbarians.
so "britons" were only a part of thse islands and the celts another. Even then there were factions , alliances and friction..

the more things change the more they stay the same

Ah Jammer - another jar of worms opened.... You see, if you want to go to that extreme, the Scots, Welsh & Cornish are the only brits left.... you angles were the invaders. So the bloody english stole that as well!!! Wink

Sorry - I work beside a walking encyclopedia. Who reads text books on history and also on astrophysics for fun... I've had to pick up something from his rants.

Anyway -I'm afraid I don't feel part of Britain - for many reasons - and the reciting of said reasons would no doubt result in another flaming session. Please accept that just like I'm anti-America for political reasons, I'm anti-Britain for mainly political reasons. But I have no personal axe to grind with my English friends (or even individual English folk I've not met) - and accept that sometimes it's best to agree to disagree about politics.

If you want to discuss this on PM, or over about 6 pints at BB3 - I'd be more than happy.

Wern't the original people of Scotland called Picts and Gaels ( Gaels shared the same language as the Irish and were "Western Scottish" ).

But hey, guess what we're all related.

People need to divide themselves into groups for some bizarre sociological reason, so you can feel superior to other groups.

zzzzzzzzz

Human...not black/white/mydicksbiggerthanyours..etc of course some will disagree.

Politics, religion and sex. I'm having none of it

The very last hand of the night goes to Dewi James, who finds ACES and talks Raymond O’Mahoney into calling his all-in preflop bet of 15k.  “If I had AQ, I’d call!” says Dewi.  Raymond calls holding pocket 66’s.

When anyone asks me (usually drunk in a public house) if I am Scottish or British, I usually say i'm European.  Cheesy

Like Rod says, big can of worms this.

Personally, I think of myself as European, British, Scottish and Aberdonian.

This debate encapulates religion and politics at some point down the line though. As such, I don't really want to get into it.

I have no choice but to be English Ive got the poxy tatoo around my belly button to remind me!!

One day when i was about 16 there was about 8 of us in the pub, in walks this guy thats showing off his "made in england tatoo" around his belly button.

What a great idea we all thought and promplty went to the tatoo parlour to get the same thing(all eight of us)!!

I know you have to be 18 and as long as you wrote a date of bith to that effect in the log book the guy that ran the gaff didnt mind too much.I already had one on my arm.

I then got a bulldog wrapped in a great brittain flag which detracted from my "i'm english" stance.

To be honest i feel like getting rid of them all.
