My fisrt post :)

Hi everyone, tis my first post on here but been following for a while!
First of all, hello to everyone, second of all a question... I play online with varied degrees of success and have been showing a reasonable return on my investment for about six months or so. The question is, what sort of percentage do you 'pay' your self - i.e. take money out of your account for beers and stuff? Do you have an hourly rate you 'pay' yourself or do you just set targets and then cash out a percentage?
Am not asking for specifics (how much you earned!) but just wandered cause I had to take a BIG chunk out of my account recently to pay some swine who kept demanding money LOL!
Many thanks in advance.

Hello Banksie and welcome to Blonde
The way I have "managed" my BR is to build up to a decent playable fund, then every so often scoop off the extra, never falling below that level that I set myself. I think everyone is different on what they need to keep online but I tend to find that for myself around 2k is fine for me. So in answer to your question, I don't really have a set amout of what I "pay" myself, as it depends on how well/bad I am doing at the time.
Hope that makes some sort of sense

Cheers Jane,
My bankroll will be kinda small compared to most on here I imagine! I wander if any of the pros on here have a take on this considering this is the way they make their ' pay check' on - line (or any of the recreational players)? I hate talking about money cause I never have any cause I always seem to spend mine down the pub! So am just wandering what someone would consider a reasonable 'wage' for playing on-line i.e. hourly rate or percentage?
Yours drunkenly

Hi Banksie and welcome to blonde -
I've played a bit online with a comparatively miniscule bankroll (500 odd) for a couple of years. I think it's not terribly helpful to set yourself hourly targets (you are playing cash?) since there will be days when despite doing nothing wrong you'll lose 30 an hour, and some days shoot up to 100s an hour. The figures are especially skewed if you are playing tournaments, as your average has to be taken over quite a considerable period of time. (It goes lose, lose, lose, lose, money back, lose, win! with the win more than cancelling out all the entries) Of course if you win loads at once there's nothing to stop you clearing your account and just going on holiday for a bit.
I suggest always leaving yourself with at least 10 buy-ins to whatever game you're playing at the moment and, like Jane says, scoop out the extra at the end of a month or so, unless you want to keep moving up limits. I think people always underestimate how much bankroll it takes to absorb the variance of online poker (especially sit'n'gos). An example - playing $20 sit'n'gos (over 6 months) I found my actual per one profit to be somewhere in the region of $5 per tournament. I'm not so great though. Playing a 0.25 - 0.50 PLHE cash game, with a 50 sit-down I have the whole 500 in there. It's horribly possible to do 5 or 6 buy-ins in one day.
If you are doing well just keep doing what you're doing. I'm sorry you had to pay someone back

lets see if i was a working man i doubt i would get out of bed for less than 20 an hour thans about 600 a week after tax so before i turned to to be an online pro and pay myself wages i would want to be clearing on average $1k a week and have a $50k bankroll behind me to cover swings.
what i would do then is every month i would move $4k from my bankroll into my bank account keeping the money seperate if my bankroll increased to a size where i could comfortably move up limits i would then give myself a pay rise if my bankroll shrunk to a level where i could no longer play at the level i was playing i would give up playing as a pro and get a proper job untill i could afford to pay myself wages again.
that being said my pension is a nice full back (but less than $1k a week)and i dont work at present but i dont play 40 hours a week of poker and have never removed money from my online bankroll its just fun for me and untill i get a bankroll of 6 figures i wont remove money from my online account and it will remain fun for me
obviously i live in 1 of the cheapest areas of the UK to live due to low house prices etc etc if i lived in central london i would have to think about moving before i could become an online pro player and i would have to think about relaitvie costs to my wages ie if i moved to england where costs of living is higher i would have to think of having a better wage to cover the cost of lap dancers

Thanks guys and gals,
I mostly play SNG's on Crypto skins so obviously can expect some variance but am not looking to make it my living (just a fun hobbie)
Like you say Ironside, I wouldn't get out of bed for more than 15 - 20 an hour
but am wondering, how much do pro's make by playing poker (on-line and B&M)? I can by no means make this my living as I don't exactly have the best game going... as yet
Thanks for the replys

Hi Banksie, & welcome to blonde.
I can't add to what has already been said, especially the very thougtful post from djinn (Jen). It's a shame Jen does not have more time to spend (waste?) on the Forum, she seems to be able to articulate her thoughts beautifully.

Cheers TK
But as an aside, I just got a pizza... who says you have to tip the pizza guy!? Sorry to change the topic but have had a few ciders
Where else, apart from a restaurant, do you have to 'tip' a person just for doing their job!
Am not a skin flint but wandered, if you turned up for work and the boss says 'well done for turning up' and you get an extra wedge it's silly. Have never been to America but can imagine it's a nightmare!

Welcome to the forum Banksie. Like tikay, I couldn't add anything more to what has been said. I am a recreational player who would dearly love to get the game together to take it up a stage, but until then I'll plod along and learn as I go. Also agree about tikay's comments about Jen's contribution, see what an education in the classics can do, without it you end up speaking like what I do.

LOL Rob. Do you find poker taking an increasingly prevalent role in your life the more you play or is that just me!? The thing is, when I get to work (yawn!) the only thing I can think about is the last few hands I played during last night's game

When I get to work I spend my time browsing browsing the Internet scouring through forums, reading articles, checking out up-coming comps, etc, etc, etc...
... so, no, you're not alone.

Cheers Snoopy,
Isn't that a bit sad though? Am not taking the mick cause I do it too! What other 'hobby' can take up so much of your time and control so many of your thoughts... when your idiot boss has a dig and you give it back... kinda like raising a rasie from a bloke you know is 'at it' and he lays it down. A certain smug grin ensues!

Yep. It is having a big affect even to the extent of re-structuring work to give me more time to devote to poker.
