Just heard the sad news that John Spencer the snooker player has died of stomach cancer. He was a great player in his era in the 70's and did a lot for the game after he retired and recently better known as a commentator on the BBC.

Hi,

Just found ur thread a nice tribute my friend, i had the great pleasure of
Of meeting this truly fine gent and even greater pleasure of playing him
Well standing there holding my cue.

Maybe u do or maybe u don't know this but he left the game alone for 15
Years then picked up a cue like he had never put down, as a one time
More than fair cueist i still find that truly remarkable.

      Neves.

In the 60's I was at college in Bolton. At that time John had a snooker club in Bolton and a few of us would go there at lunchtimes. On one occasion there were 5 of us and I sat out while the others played. John had just won the world championship and was practising nearbye. After a few minutes he asked if I wanted a game....I nearly burnt a path across the carpet.

A number of years later in the 80's I was joint owner of a snooker club and John came over a couple of times giving demo's and playing with the regulars.

He was a true gentleman and a genuinely nice guy.

Spencer was class on and off the table. Great character and sense of humour too. Sorry to hear he's no longer with us.

My childhood memories of saturday sport....snooker and wrestling.

Mr Spencer features in them.

RIP John
