I wondered where he was as well.  It is strange how we notice things when they are different. Sort of like moving away from a busy railway line and waking up during the night because of the lack of noise .

Wow, I was missed! "(Like piles"?, as Kev said....).

I headed North Saturday afternoon, mixture of play & "work", & the "work" went on longer than expected, & was more ntensive, so I never got back home until Monday evening. I never had time to get Online while in Newcastle, I had a mountain of e-Mails to catch up on, & did not feel too good, so I had an early night. This morning I have got caught up on my PM's, sorry for the delay in replying to these.

I had a great time in Newcastle, but a terrible thing happened on Saturday night, & that's my main memory of the weekend.

I stayed at The Copthorne, which is right on the banks of the Tyne, beautiuful.

Played a marvellously organised comp, some cash, which was enormous fun, and did a lot of TV work, not just 425, all rather good fun. Life is good, I thought.

I went back to my Hotel about 0200 Sunday, I had a no-smoking room, so decided to pop outside for a pre-bed ciggie. Lovely warm night, sat on the steps that lead down to the Tyne & puffed my ciggie contentedly, how nice is this I thought?

Suddenly, a Police boat - BOAT - went roaring past, lights flashing (!), & parked itself under one of the many bridges over the Tyne. Then I noticed several Police Cars on the bridge, blue lights reflecting on the water.

A geezer wanders up to me, clearly a local, he was fishing, & told me the score.

"See, we got another jumper".

"A jumper?"

"Yeah, sucicide, like. We get one or two a week, always the same bridge, easy to get too see?"

"What? Does the jump always prove fatal?"

"Yup, the water is shallow, see. They get washed up 2 miles upstream, 3 or 4 days late. Geezer jumped last week, they found his body yesterday, all bloated up, like".

"Old, young, middle-aged?"

"Mostly kids I think, 20, 25, teenagers sometimes".

And I'm thinking, jeez, whatever drives kids to get so desperate.

Anyway, they evidently "talked down" this would be jumper, thank God. Phew.

I did not know what to say or think, truly. So I said to the geezer, "what you doing fishing here at 0200 mate?".

"Oh, it passes the time. I'm the night-watchman on a building site up the road, & it's so boring, so I fish all night".

"But arent you supposed to be guarding the building?"

"Oh no, not really. Thing is, our instructions are if someone breaks in, we just leave them to it, it's Health & Safety Regs see, I'm not allowed to inerfere case I get hurt".

Ahh, I said, I see now.......

"Caught many fish?" I said.

"Yup, got a 15" eel".

"Wow, what, tonight?"

"Nah, about a fortnight ago".

With that I went to bed, much confused. What a truly crazy world we live in. I did not know whether to laugh or cry. Kids killing themselves, night-watchman fishing cos his job is so boring that catching a 15" eel every fortnight is more exciting than his job.

Back to the bedroom, & sleep solved all these problems for a few hours.

Anyways, thanks for asking after me.

Man, I need to get a job as a nightwatchman near somewhere with a wifi/wimax connection, get paid to sit on my arse playing poker at primetime vs the yanks and if you get robbed you don't even have to do anything.

Perfect.
