I have AOL as my broadband provider but was wondering if it was possible to get on the net using IE without having to sign on via my AOL?
I remember someone saying that they do this a while back but cant recall them saying how.
I currently have 2meg wireless broadband (Belkin router)

Yes, with a router you are always signed in, just open internet explorer

It doesnt work RED,
unable to find connection, but my wireless says "connected to wireless - signal excellent"
Could it be i need to configure the router?

Dunno. I have AOL and I can just use IE without opening AOL or signing in.

Jim, i'm sure AOL can be set to use IE. If i remember correctly, its a choice at the start of the installation. Anyway take a read of this, it is possible: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=165474 |

You probably have to set the internet explorer connection settings up properly - it might not be looking to connect via the router.

Configure a full access AOL screen name (different from your own). Then set the router to login using that screenname.
Voila, internet always on. Theres instructions on the AOL site somewhere.

That's 5 years old!
First check what it says under "Tools > Internet Options > Connection settings" in IE.
The set up wizard should guide you through - just say you want to connect by LAN

It works fine thru AOL,
Im sure that when i set up the router i entered a screen name and password that we dont use.

No, thats not true. The router makes the physical connection via the ADSL into BT Wholesale. Then is where AOL differs from every other ISP in the country. They have a different protocol which means it is not just sufficient that you specify the VPI, username and password, but the router must comply with the protocol. If it doesnt, then your own PC is responsible for the final connection - hence having to sign in VIA the AOL screenname before surfing will work. yes the physical connection is there, but the connection to the AOL DCHP server and thus the internet, is not. The Router will not have an IP address unless the full aol screenname and password is provided and it has the AOL protocol in it. |
