It works fine thru AOL,

Im sure that when i set up the router i entered a screen name and password that we dont use.

Well if you've done that and the router is compatible then one would presume the connection is being made.... do what RED suggests and test something otehr than a browser...

One presumes his router is already connected to the net though, hence it working through his AOL browser.
yes the physical connection is there, but the connection to the AOL DCHP server and thus the internet, is not. The Router will not have an IP address unless the full aol screenname and password is provided and it has the AOL protocol in it.

So then if he opens AOL and gets on the net fine he should be able to open IE (with AOL still open) and it should work?

If not then there would be a problem with the IE settings (bare in mind that most other apps will use the IE settings...)

No, anyone with aol can connect thru it and minimise it and use any browser they like

Have to agree with Bongo....if you're connected via AOL and open IE which tells you it can't make the connection it sounds like IE settings need to be changed.

The connection IE is looking for is probably the method that you used to use to connect to internet before you had router ( ie dial up or broadband modem connection)

Try ......Tools - Internet Options - then "connection" tab.     I'd advise having the "never dial a connection" option selected if it isn't already.

Hes not connected via AOL when hes trying to get the browser to connect. What hes trying to do is get it so that he doesnt have to have the stupid AOL software running on his PC.

If he fires up AOL on the PC, connects, then minimises it, all is fine.
But, if he tries to get the router to login to AOL and bypass having the software on the PC, its not working.

IE works in the first instance, but not the second (can you confirm this please Jim?).

Close the aol software.

Right click the aol icon beside your pc clock (bottom right) and select start aol dialler or connect depending on which of the 2 aol icons you use. Once connected use internet explorer.

You need to open the software as normal to get the aol content though.

I have an AOL broadband box and a wireless router. I can use Internet Explorer without being connected to AOL and i can open Pokerstars without being connected to either IE or AOL.

To be honest i get disconnected from AOL so many times now that i very rarely use it when browsing internet.

Dont know how it all happened, everything just seemed to work when i connected the wireless router!
