Just watching the BBC programme on the world cup - absolute scum of the earth, and cowards to boot, but how do you stop it without removing alcohol to add to the banning orders?

Did you watch the series on Sky about the firms around the country? Amazing stuff. It's the booze that makes them fight, it's inbred, the booze just adds to the occasion, banning it wouldn't stop the hardcore hooligans.

Exactly.
I thought this program was crap.
These wernt hooligans, just a bunch of supporters displaying a continuation of the weekend binge drinking culture we have in the U.K.
If the proper hooligans turned up the program would still be on when you got up for work in the morning.

booze or no booze, they still will fight.
thought the documentary was boring, just like all the other documentarys on the subject which have been made before, nothing new. its such a small % of the england fans abroad and to be honest, its all expected and no different to friday night up n down the country.

As a wee lad around the mid 80's I started watching Leeds Utd. My fascination for them lasted right unto 1997 when I started University and my passion subsided considerably when poker, women and computers took over.
The first few years of traveling around the country with them I witnessed some absolutely shocking things, mass fights, stabbings, police brutality, racist behavior on a grandee scale, and the infamous Brighton beech invasion (when we won promotion).
I really loved the buzz of watching Leeds and rolling up to difference locations weekly, safe in the knowledge nothing bad would happen as there was always 5000 other Leeds fans to look after the small lads.
I got to know a lot of the so called “Hard boys” and it’s true what some have said, the ones who were there to fight very rarely drunk before it happened. They were calculated and planned fights weeks before the event. The police really didn’t give a fig unless it was near busy public places; they always turned a blind eye. I would see reasonable men turn into complete tossers at the thought of getting into fights with other fans and its always been something I could not understand.
The recent film with Elijah woods in called “Hooligans” was a good portrayal of the stuff that I used to be on the fringe off and witness. Leeds fans always took delight at going down to London and taking their cop or their local pubs.
I would say the days of such violence in this country are gone thank god.

Bolt, by being involved in stuff like that they are hooligans... they may not be the organised type but they are definatly under that banner. The trouble is you get the a lot more of the friday night fighters in one place (unless I've been sheltered by the lack of this stuff on nights in Leeds, M'boro and Newcastle).
The banning orders usually do a good job of stopping the organised section, if you ban alcohol too then you remove the other half - that would leave you with an actual 'minority' (such a funny word in football) who could be controlled, though preferably just put down.
You have to agree with some of the things on last night, the number of parents performing like idiots in front of their kids - there is no hope.

Actually, it was called Green Street (Hooligans)
Good film, I was surprised to see the little hobbit get into something like that and didn't think it would work but it shows how getting in to something like that could happen. Scarey stuff.

I actually know a few of these hooligans (i even know 3 who have written books, well ghostwritten for them).
These are oddly really nice people away from it all, a few i took to the casino and 2 of them are now regulars at Walsall!!
For the real hardcore it was always as much to do with crime than fighting (while the police were distracted they robbed shops etc.).
I know one chap who is a phenominally successful businessman who is banned from every ground in the country and has to surrender his passport 2 weeks before an England away fixture!
I do understand the gang mentality, getting swept along with it and all that but that is situational, i don't understand the reasoning behind putting yourself in the situation week in week out.

Of course not.
