I never knew you were connected to the Church, Tikay.

Do you ever sleep?  You must be busy constantly.  Poker  TV  Church  Trains

Don't forget Bridges - I've got some nice books about bridges - Mobile Cranes - the 12 axle (all steer!) ones particularly, Buses, Lorries, Aeroplanes, Cats, and Harbours - I adore Harbours. Mombasa Harbour is one of my faves, but Miami is cool too, as is Southampton. Oooh, & Railway Stations. And Racehorse breeding.

Books, too - just read a spine-chilling account of the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima, you cannot begin to imagine how awful it was, on one side of the Pacific the lucky ones were dead, the rest dying a horrendous death, on the other side of the Pacific, it was parties & happy hour all night. Just so hard for us in this day & age to grasp how it got to that. And Alan Clark's quite splendid Diaries - what a mixture of contradictions he was. Animal lover, Nazi sympathiser, womaniser, loving husband. Yes, all those.

Oh well, back to work.

I read a book about Isambard Kingdom Brunel after watching Jeremy Clarkson's BBC show about him a couple of years ago.  He was an amazing guy, his father was also an engineer.

Cheesy    My Unlce used to have traction engines that he took to various outside farming shows.  He doesn't do it anymore, instead he runs his own telephone museum.

Hull used to have Black Telephone Boxes, they had the only Private Telephone Service in the UK, in those days. Kingston Communications, I believe it was called. Fascinating.

There is a TOC called Hull Trains now too. They operate "Meridians" from Hull to Kings Cross.

Hull Football Ground  the old one, Boothberry Park, had it's own little Railway Station, Boothberry Halt.

Hull Railway Station itself had the longest platforms in the UK in those days, so they could load the fish trains at night.

Fascinating place, all things considered.

The phone boxes in Hull were white (in the 70s at any rate)

When BT changed to the new, modern style box in the 80s, my brother Tracy and I bought over 200 of the old ones. We took 6 of them on a lorry to a bloke we knew who would buy anything 'interesting' He bought them, saying he would sell them on as garden ornaments, shower cubicles, etc.

We asked him if he would buy any more, if we should happen to find any. "Of course" he said "I'll buy as many as you can get"

After about three weeks of 4 lorry loads a day, he began to regret those words, he had phone boxes in every available bit of space, even in his back garden. We thought he was going to burst into tears, but he didn't renege,

He had the last laugh though, after cursing them for about two years, he sold them to a visiting American entrepreneur and made an absolute killing

i recall a rather interesting "sculpture" whcih used to (may still actually)  grace Kingston on Thames, which was  group pf about 10 of these phone boxes "toppled over". I thought it looked pretty smart.

I thinnk Red's right on this one Tikay, they were white when I worked for them and the ones in their little museum were white as well. They still have the private Telco, it came about because businessmen in Hull clubbed together to set up one of the (then) newfangled telephony networks. They did it before the Post Office started theirs and so BT have never had a presence in Hull (who get VERY cheap calls).

One other bit of useless info, their network management centre overlooks the corner where the ladies of the evening operate, a dodgy nightclub & a kebab shop... fantastic entertainment when you were doing nightshifts, especially on a bank holiday weekend.
