You know the sort. Pick up any Sunday newspaper magazine and look at the back page and there they are

"For only 49.95 you can have one of these limited edition Cocker Spaniel plates by leading artist John Bloggs"

usually, its animals, royalty or some such

They strike me as a complete waste of money but clearly there is a market for such tat. I expect ebay's beginnings were borne of it...

My life was mending its merry way into middle age with the usual ups and downs when I received a list last week from my 94 year old grandad, who I am close to, when I went to visit him. He's not well and knows he hasn't got long and he is getting everything into order

I am thrilled and honoured to have been given some of his treasured possessions from when he was a Squadron Leader at RAF Henlow in WW2, there is also some other personal stuff I am touched to receive and I'll keep it all for my kids

but amongst the list there was this item...the picture represents one of the batch of this limited edition plate.....apparently it has a print of Liberace's signature on the back too..I suspect it was my late grandmother's! At least I hope so

I remain speechless, and would like to know if you have ever received anything that has left you similarly gobsmacked! Furthermore, have you ever bought a plate like this. Why?

I hope you are giving it pride of place on your living room wall.

No, I've never bought anything like that, but my mother is terribly prone to buying such tat.  She and her siblings also have a 'fun' thing of buying each other the tackiest gifts they can find when they go away.  Trouble is, when I visit I find it very hard to differentiate between items that have been acquired through the 'tack' buying programme or things my mum has actually bought in seriousness.  Many a time I've put my foot in it by saying "where on earth did anyone find that piece of tat?"

actually, while I'm here I'd be interested for (honest) opinions on the work of this artist:

http://www.deborahvallancedesigns.co.uk/index.html

I bought a piece of her work for, what was for me, a considerable sum of money because I fell in love at first sight with it.  I've noticed since that a lot of people don't seem to see it in the same light as I do, and suspect some of them think I've gone a bit doolally in buying it.

a very good friend of mine gave me a Salvador Daly print right before he moved out of the country. He had had the thing for ages and I had always assumed it was just one of those cheap replicas you buy for a tenner and therefore only once remarked what a  "nice poster it was" (not in a nasty way)...when he gave it to me he said it was because I was the only one that actually liked it for what it was....turned out the thing was signed and all....YIKES! Needless to say that. even though it doesn't go with anything I have, I have it proudly displayed in my room.

I know nothing about paintings etc but because I fell in love at first sight with it is the only opinion that matters.
Enjoy your painting.

My parents have got loads of wierd and wonderful stuff, both from their travels and from my Grandparents...

The Old Dears bought a fair amount of Gold coins in various countries - all coin dealers here will only offer based on the weight. They also have all Bermuda First Day Covers (stamps) from 68-80, no-one can say what they're worth. There's also masonic memorabilia and papers from my Grandad who was apparently extremely high up in the pinkywigglers - something else getting valuations is almost impossible for.

The last thing my Dad's got which I quite fancy keeping is a signed menu from a flight he took as a Kilmarnock player to the first USA International Soccer League tournament in 1960. The Menu is signed by all the teams on the flight - Killie, Glentoran, Burnley and Bayern Munich. This is unpriceable  but probably worth a fair bit to a collector.
