Windows has hearts on it so i would get some practice. Generally i try to get rid of one suit quickly so that i can get rid of cards i don't want with no risk. Other than that it's just about putting down the highest value card that you can. Sometimes (early on) that will mean winning the trip which is fine as long as you have a low card to start the next one with. i.e. if you have the

and

and you are nearly last to act. Put down the

(to win the trip) then start the next trip with the

. Once you have got rid of a suit (diamonds, say), you can lay a heart next time someone starts with a diamond.
Hope this makes sense, i'm playing 4 tables + writing this.
Edit, early on, try to remember who has run out of a particular suit. Later on you can't do it cos too many people will have run out of different suits.
