and here seems to be the answer - this is from Fasthosts System Status website :
Thu 14-Sep-2006 8:29AM Closed: Connectivity Issues
Some of our customers will be experiencing intermittent slowness or a lack of connectivity to their websites and Email. Our engineers are aware of this issue and are working to resolve this as soon as possible. Additionally some users will be having connectivity issues to their POP services.
Update: After investigation, our engineers believe this is only affecting customers using the BT broadband network. We are continuing to investigate this and will update this status page when more news is available. Additionally, our POP service is starting to recover and customers may notice service beginning to resume normally.
14:28 - This issue is now resolved.
So only those trying to access Blonde from BT Broadband, or another broadband service provided by BT will have the problems.
I'm sure your tech guys will be giving you a more detailed explanation !
