You Gotta Speculate to Accumulate

Riiight, here's the thing! I call myself a successful Poker Player... reason being that I make a tidy profit from the game.

My income is generated mainly from MTT Final Table appearances (oh yeah, i should add, this is online playing btw) I also have a very nice return from playing STT's.  I've been winning regularly in these formats for a year now and in that time have sometimes dabbled in Cash Games but never really thought of them as my route to making my money as I enjoy playing tournament structures much more.

Recently i've decided to play more cash games as I don't wanna be what some may call a 'one trick pony'

BUT

I just can't do it!!!

Obviously i'm not stupid enough to keep playing cash tables as I lose money 70% of the time i'd imagine... but it really baffles me that there is such a huge difference in the way things end up!  I have tried every single tactic imaginable in a bid to become a successful cash player.  Firstly, I adopted my tournament style of tight and aggressive but just get fed up with the number of beats I take to people calling pre-flop raises with absolute **** and hitting their straights and flushes.  After a lot of studying i'm afraid it appears to me that Bingo is a more appropriate name for cash games the higher you go up the stakes.  I'm not being completely blinkered as I obviously appreciate that it's not 100% the case as i've seen some excellent poker played on cash tables.

I'm losing my way here and not sure where i'm going with this anymore but the point is that 1, I feel better for bashing the keyboard with this spiel and 2, Why am I unable to convert fantastic tourny success into cash success no matter what i try!!??

C'mon people... let's be havin ya!

Honestly....stick to what your good at, and what makes you money, i know someone that only playes heads up for money and ZERO other poker, and he doesnt have a problem with that, (or if he does, he profit helps to ease the pain)

One trick pony aint that bad.

If your looking for cash game advice, i only dabble occasionally in higher stakes levels when i feel up to it, so no real advice here

I've just started playing cash games but I had to go to no limit, I can't play limit and it costs me a fortune.

I just grind away patiently.  Two tables at a limit I feel comfy at and I make a small amount each night.  I find I have to me a lot more patient than I do in mtt's and stt's and I really only play decent hands.  Occasionally, I get bored of folding all the time and play some iffy ones but then I lose the money and remember why I play tight.   When you hit, you usually get paid off good too.

Hmmmm, the thing is I can sit at an MTT and happily not play a hand for an hour but at a cash table it just ain't happening.  I see too many    's and    's getting played that I feel angered into jumping in with hands that I wouldn't even dream of in a tourny!

Oh well

Patience, much more so than in mtt's.  The blinds aren't going anywhere so you have lots of time.

Cash is TOTALLY different from Tourney play.

2 years ago I was the same, couldnt win a bean at cash - but realised that was where the "REAL" money was to be made.

Now, I am still not a good cash game player, but I am ok and still learning and hopefully improving.

Don't you find that people are much less willing to play hands with you at cash tables if you're this patient though?? As opposed to MTT's where i find people don't really notice as much

I have quit playing cash games recently and now only play STT.  In my last 28 STT since Wed morning , I have cashed 21 times.  I put this down to Wardonkeys articles and re-reading everything tank has written about STT. I may go back to cash games in 6 months or so, but before I do that, I am going to study everything I can find on cash game strategy starting with totalises thread.

Stick with what you are winning at mate .  good luck

I am also of the opinion that to go from MTT's to Cash is ALOT harder than going from Cash to MTT's.

Yeah, i'm not quite sure of the reasons why but I definately agree with that statement M3boy

To start with, yes, but after a while at the table, I find that you get no respect for playing tight at all.

I've really only been playing cash for a couple of weeks but I make more profit playing 25c/50c NLHE in a night than I do playing sng's. My ITM % on sng's was pretty good (around 50% - that's not too bad is it?) but the profit I was making was low but profit is profit.

Oh and one thing I have learnt, don't call with carp from the SB - it may be a cheap flop to see, but overall,  I'm way down in cash from calling from the small blind with rubbish!

Sark, can you pm me that link too please?  I'm trying to absorb cash play articles at the moment Cheesy
