One for the computer geeks
«

When I first boot up my computer, there is a file called svchost.exe (username SYSTEM) that uses up large portions of CPU.
This only happens for a bit (it returns to 0 usage after a few minutes), but, as I am aware that this file can be disguised as a trojan, I thought I'd ask some of you computer geeks out there if this was particulalry unusual.
I have scanned my hard-drive using NOD32, AVG and ad-aware, yet none have identified any kind of spyware or virus.
I have also searched the hard-drive and the svchost.exe file seems to be in its usual place with no additional ones located anywhere on my computer. ( I also scoured the hidden files)
Should I do anything else to make sure that this file isn't a dodgy one?
If I do have a svchost disguised as a trojan, would it be the same file but corrupted, or an additional one?
Would the trojan file have the same address (ie Windows/System32), or would it be somewhere else on my hard-drive.
As I said, everything seems perfectly normal except for the fact that in those opening few moments when I boot up, it appears to use up a lot of CPU.
Thx in advance.

svchost.exe is simply Windows running services - leave it alone.
It has a spurt at the start because that's when Windows starts running things - it settles down once it's finished doing some of those things. Multiple instances of it are normal. Yes it can be targeted by trojans/viruses, but then that would have been picked up when you did the scan.
What you've done Snoopy, is the equivalent of waking up in the morning, and feeling something thumping on the left side of your chest, then going to the doctor to ask if this is normal.

Batman finally finds his niche
Batman found his niche years ago, he gave it up to be a vigilante and latterly a control freak in the Justice league.

Do you have a partition on your hard disk and how full is it. Sounds like a defrag is in order to me.

Are you able to elaborate further. My knowledge of defragging is slim to none.

Google O&O defrag. You get a 30 trial and when that runs out pm me.
When you install it you can just click defrag and it does it all for you.

Which is exactly how much it needs to be. Defragging your hard drive won't do any harm, but it really won't make much difference to anything.

Windows comes with a defragger - why on earth would you need a third-party app?

Cos the windows defragger isn't all that good.
Snoops is this your laptop, defragging will help when windows is loading because it is likely to use the pagefile and if your hard drive is full of crap and it needs to extend the size of your pagefile, it will take time while it searches for space on your hard disk.

Can I just say this thread was as informative to me as if Dewi had written it in Welsh. Absolutely no idea what is going on here.
