PC HELP - Any idea?
«
on:
September 28, 2006, 09:12:25 PM »
My sisters PC keeps logging her off within seconds of her signing onto Windows, sometimes it will show the desktop but mainly it doesn't even get that far. It won't allow her to start in safe mode either as it does exactly the same thing.
Any idea what the problem could be? and how to go about fixing it over the phone would be greatly appreciated!

What do you mean by logging off?
Rebooting?

No, from what she said it is just logging off, going back to the password screen.

Seems like there is some kind of script that is performing a logoff action upon logon.
We used to do these for a laugh back in the days of novell netware and DOS/Win3.11... We where far grown up by the time 98/NT came around to try something so immature.

Can she get into the "administrator" account in safemode. (seperate account to her main one? it's usually there...)

She can't do anything in safemode, and it still boots her off again.
She has done some major trawling about and now think that it's either sasser or sober virus, not sure how accurate this is as Jo is a complete non-geek. No idea with puters at all.

My main desktop has packed up, when I switch it on I don't get anything, the power button flashes red and clicks, screen doesn't turn on, and I cant just hold the power button in and switch it off, it has to be by the plug, it's a 14 months old, HP, multimedia PC.
Apart from throw it away, any ideas please?

I think you are probably going to have to take out the Hard Disk and stick it into another machine as a slave drive and then try something like running crap cleaner on it.
www.ccleaner.com
You may also want to run a virus checker on that drive. I don't think you're going to be able to login otherwise
Once you've cleaned the stuff off the drive, put it back in your existing machine and boot up, hopefully the problem will have been removed.
Or try reininstalling windows XP -

Sasser and Sober are like 3 years old... even basic protection should stop them - once she's got it sorted do her a favour and get her some decent AV and firewall on there.

That's the two options that I could come up with, was really hoping there was a simpler way lol.

If I got paid for the techy work that I do for my sister I would be able to buy in to the W.S.O.P each year from her alone! I'm on the phone weekly with things like this and get my hands on her PC about twice a year to give it a proper health check (twice a year is noooooo way often enough for her PC lol) and it takes me days to get it sorted out and running smoothly again!
I give up trying to get her to keep the updates - up to date, or just NOT to uninstall programs that she needs.
I give up with her! (but still love my big Sis to bits
)

I have siad this many many times, when you re install a new hard drive, or buy a new pc - BUY ANOTHER HARD DRIVE THE SAME AS THE ONE YOU HAVE.
Get the new drive to the state you want it, ie all your programs installed, THEN COPY THE WHOLE DRIVE TO THE NEW DRIVE (Most DD Manufacturers have software to do this on their site).
Put the copied drive out of the way.
That way if anything foes wrong, just pop in the "copied" drive and have your old drive as slave - copy any data files across that you can (ie music files etc.....)
Then repeat the process of copying the "copied" drive to the origional one, remove the copied drive.
