Overtoun Bridge
«

In one of today's newspapers there was an article about a bridge in Dumbarton called Overtoun Bridge. Apparently this bridge is a hot spot for dogs committing suicide. Over the last year, six dogs have jumped from the bridge without reason. This has been happening for many years now.
I can't find the actual article I read, but this is something along the same lines written in January this year.

There is also something about it on wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overtoun_Bridge
I don't believe in all this psychic nonsense and believe there must be a reason for this happening. They probably pick up a scent and follow it without realising there is a 40ft drop below.

Is there anyone on here that has been to the bridge or know the area?

sorry, but this bit made me giggle:
Joyce Stuart, a leading canine behaviourist, said: “I have never heard of a dog committing suicide and I don’t think for one minute they go along the bridge and suddenly think ‘I can’t go on’ and jump.”
What a bizarre story though, a proper mystery to be solved.

I'm sorry, but that's cracked me up. The dog that thinks "I can't go on, it's all too much for me"......!

I am all for preserving antique architecture, but if I had my way they would put railings all the way along the bridge to prevent any more accidents. They would if it was people jumping off. As far as I know they can't do it because the bridge is protected under Scottish heritage or something like that .
The guy in today's article said he bent down on his hands and knees to get a view from a dogs level. He said the edge of the bridge looks almost level with the tree line and because of this the dogs may not have been able to see that there was a drop below

I really think dog owners should follow the very sensible advice in the article - keep your dog on a lead when you're crossing that bridge.

Maybe it was the owners that were going to commit suicide, and the dogs with their remarkable esp decided to show their owners how dangerous jumping from a 40ft bridge could be, compelling the owners to instead get drunk and go to work the next day and punch their boss in the head.

My dog actually fell off a bridge about a week after we got him. We were out a walk in Ayr and he slipped his lead, now he doesn't need a leash, but back then we were still getting used to each other. He ran towards the bridge and jumped up on the side of it. My other dog was abit annoyed about this newcomer coming into the pack and he ran over towards him a tried to jump up and in the process knocked him over the edge. My heart almost stopped when I saw him disappear over the edge as I knew there was a big drop. I had to ask an old guy to hold my other dog while I lowered myself down to get him. He was a lucky boy and apart from a cut eye there was no damage. I am still not sure if my other dog planned to get rid of him by pushing him off the bridge or it was just an accident. After extensive interviewing, my dog never owned up to attempted murder

Better to have charged him with Dogslaughter.
