Apparently my AMD Athalon or Athlon  (I can't be arsed getting up and going to look at the correct spelling) has some sort of thermal cut off on it, and seeing as my fan ain't spinning  (in more ways than one  Wink) it's cutting out to protect my PC.

Thank you Bongo for your help, but as usual I panicked and then sussed it myself.

My Dad's off work for a week now, and has lots of bits of computer spares lying around, so hopefully it'll be up and running again in a couple of days.

Ah James  its so sweet of you to offer!!

At the time of losing my rag, 24 people had viewed the thread and only Ironside had had the decency to try and help!!

It was like a warzone in here with me and the kids all screaming at each other - just cos they couldn't get on bloody Runescape!!

dont forget the thermal paste when fitting a new fan, otherwise it will overheat again.

Maplins website has some, I guess in store will be the same.

If it's a second hand fan, it would be worth getting some TIM Cleaner to make sure the surface of the fan is clean before applying it.

Probably better, they are only cheap and will come with the thermal paste on already.  It's messy stuff to apply.

You might not need it, if you're just changing the fan then it will be ok.

If you are removing the heatsink from the CPU (or whatever else if it isn't the CPU fan) then you will need some.

I argued the toss with him about that paste and he said only if it is for the heat sink as well, anyway he hasn't used any, but I could scream at what he has done!!!

The new fan he has got for it is bigger that the old one and so the screws won't match up - so what has he done?

He's only f***in superglued it in place!!!!!!!!

Oh I can hear you all laughing now, I'm not laughing - I'm soooo not laughing.  He says to me, you will know if it has come loose cos it will make a funny noise!!!

God give me strength from men and their bodge jobs!!!
