Game Report for Cincinnati Visit 08/09/05
Tourney - £15 NLHE with maximum 1 rebuy or topup allowed within first hour, initial chips are 3k with blinds 50/100 until the rebuy period is over.
After a lot of organisation the night of the tourney finally arrived. Again, like the riverboat we did quite well, when I eventually left, around 2am we had 1 player from GPS at the final table and a friend of ours from "The Lab" bar also at the final table. Unfortunately I wasn't able to remain to see the climax, it looked like it was going to run until 4am.
We arrived at 7.30pm prompt and registered as members. A very simple process, one small form for name/address and some id, they take a photograph and that's you registered.
Inside and I have to say I was very impressed with the surroundings, there were around 10 tables on the ground floor and another 3 upstairs, including the top table. The place is nicely decorated with ornate ceilings, chandelliers and a sweeping staircase to the upper levels. The bar is relatively small, but who's going to sit at the bar all night in a card room, especially when there are so many tables to take your drinks to.
Registering for the tourney was simple, £15 at the cash desk and thats you in. At around 8pm they put on a magic show in aid of the local youth hospice with donations collected at the end. I must say, the card tricks were pretty stunning, I particularly liked the shuffling trick where he knew how many cards, their colours, suits etc would be in the pack.
On to poker. The tourney started at 8.30pm prompt. Seat allocation was done by putting all the seat tickets on a table and allowing players to select their seats from the face down pile. I was told that a few folk had checked their seats and swapped them, but I wasn't too fussed about where I sat, allocated seat c4, it was going to be my bearth for a couple of hours. An idea would be to supervise the seat selection in future.
I have my 3k chips and I'm going to make them last, that's the plan anyway. We have 11 players at our table, including markpenn (Seat 10) from GPS and Tony Chessa (seat 9), a professional poker player who normally plays in ranking tournaments all over the world. He was here to promote poker and join in with the amateur players. One seat, seat 7 was empty at the start, but the chips were left and he was folded out of the pots until he arrived a few hands later. Seat 2 is a seasoned 5-card stud player but v.new to Hold'Em, I believe this is why he became the calling station at the table, believing his hands were stronger than they were..
Easy tell:
We played a few hands, nothing major was happening until seat 7 arrived. He hadn't been aware that the tourney was limited to 1 rebuy and was not happy when he found out. Watching his mood he looked ready to go all-in with anything so he could find a more expensive tourney elsewhere. Having noticed this and being dealt AKo under the gun I decided to raise 1k (10xbig blind), hoping everyone except seat 7 would fold. 5, 6 fold, seat 7 raises all-in all others fold, I call. Heads up, we flip, he shows AKs. Damn... Split pot. Next hand and I'm in the BB and dealt KQo. I'm still thinking he's going all-in with any 2 cards... he goes all-in again, all fold to me and I call. No-one else in the pot, show cards. He shows 64o, no improvement for him on the board and I've double my stack early doors. Seat 7 leaves the table without using his rebuy and goes to find another table. I'm hoping there are more players that don't want to be there.
Marks JJ's:
A couple of hands later and markpenn is dealt JJ in the small blind and calls a small raise by seat 1. A few limpers leaves 4 in the pot at the flop. Flop AQT rainbow, mark checks, player 1, 2, 3 still left. Afair player 2 goes all-in, 2, 3 fold and mark thinks for a while and calls thinking player 2 is onto nothing... Player 2 shows top pair, the board gives no help and mark is having to rebuy. I think this was a bad call, but mark was thinking that player 2 was on a draw as he had made similar moves earlier that night.
Q6o:
In the dealer position I limp in with Q8o hoping for the miracle flop. It's almost a miracle, Qx8 rainbow... all check to player 1 who raises 2k, all fold to me and I'm all-in. Player 1 folds and I scoop another pot.
Break:
We get to the break and I'm in a good position, approx 8k chips, no rebuys or topups. Mark is down to about 1400 chips and says he's no chance and is going all-in with the first face card. I haul him back and tell him the blinds are only 100/200 and he can easily sit for 2 rounds waiting on the right cards.
QQ:
About 12 hands after the break and Mark is dealt QQ, he's down to 1200 chips and has gone all-in pre-flop. 3 callers, all with more chips. Side pot. Flop JT9 rainbow... player 2 raises, 2 callers, so 4 in for the pot. Turn 7. Player 2 all-in, 2 callers. Cards over. Player 2 shows 8x, str8. Other 2 players are beat, one with 2 pair, JT's and another with pair. Mark seems dead until the river produces the miracle 8, giving mark the Q high straight. Mark takes the main pot, player 2 recoups the side pot and 2 players are out. Very nice hand. Mark has quadrupled up.... It pays to be patient short-stacked.
A6s:
I'm dealt A6s on the button, calls all the way and I raise 2k pre-flop. Get 2 callers, player 11 & 3. Flop comes xKJ, two spades. Player 11 raises 1k, player 2 calls.. There is approx 8k in the pot and it's going to cost 1k to call, I call. Next card J, hmm.... Player 11 raises 1k. Again, there is a large pot and a small raise, 1 card to my nut flush and pot odds say take it. Player 3 calls, I call. Next card, 5spades... glorious nut flush... player 11 checks, player 3 bets 1k.. ye-ha, I raise 3k... player 3 sighs... Player 11 flat calls and player 3 folds. I show the nut flush and panic as he's not bothered. Holding KJ he has JJJKK Boat and I'm down to 4.5k chips. I still don't know why he didn't re-raise me on the river, perhaps he thought I may have had KK. Anyway, that's me down in chips... thankfully I didn't go on tilt and accepted it as a good hand. Worked in my favour, next hand dealt AQs, all-in on the BB and one caller... Thinking I was on tilt I suspect. He shows A9 or similar and I double up. Back to about 9k...
AQo:
30 mins later and I'm dealt AQo, I raise pre-flop, 2k, one caller, the new seat 7. Flop A28, two clubs. Player 7 raises 2k, I ask how much he's got.. I would have 2.5k left so go all-in. He flips AA... argh... slow playing the Aces pre-flop... chancer. The Aces hold up and I'm getting low on chips.
Moved Tables:
In the BB and I'm asked to move to table D, I think mark was still in when I left... although not for long. I also luck out and get giving the pleasure of dealing netclectic is sitting 2 seats to my left, DaveT is at the table, along with TeaCake .. If I leave anyone out, it's because I wasn't at the table for very long
Dealing:
First hand I deal, DaveT gets KK, he's sitting to my right. Player to my left is all-in with 33. K's hold up and one player eliminated. Next hand and I again hit 2 pair on the flop, KJ's... I raise all-in but no callers. Damn. Next hand and netclectic is BB and short stacked, I'm SB. 2 callers including me. Flop gives me nothing and he's put all in by DaveT. netclectic calls... can't remember the cards, but DaveT takes it and netclectic is out. 2 empty seats to my left now, where just 3 hands ago there had been players. I think my dealing is wounding the table. Next hand I'm on the button.. all fold to me, as netclectic was out previous hand there is no SB, only the BB... I glance at his chips, he has about the same as me 4.5k chips... In my only bluff of the evening I attempt to steal the blinds with a 2k raise... He thinks for a while, then goes to the bottom of his stack, which is hidden behind the lip of the felt, and pulls out a 5k pink chip... All-in shit, I should have walked round the table to see if he was hiding chips... Or I could have asked... I only have 2k left and decide to Gamble as the blinds are 300/600 I won't last much longer. This was a mistake, he shows A8 and hits 2 pair on the board to my pair of 4's. That's me out of the tourney... I deal 4 hands and 3 players get knocked out... all had been sitting next to each other.
The end:
I'm not going to report on the rest of the evening, only to say we played a £10 STT, I came 4th when my QQ got beat by A9o after I called all-in pre-flop.
Very enjoyable night of poker, much better than the bingo format that low stakes unlimited rebuys produce.
Thanks to all at Cincinattis for hosting the game, thanks also to Tony Chessa for taking time out of playing the worlds best to mix it with the amateurs (future worlds best).

Just to finish off -there was a deal to end this
- but only when it got to heads up at 3:30. (paying out to all8 at the final table helped keep things moving though)
I've said on another post that there'll be some rethinking on the structure - probably introduce an ante.
If anyone's got advice on the %age, timing etc of using an ante as well as BB/SB it would be appreciated.

It was quite exceptional. I don't like to deal, but I've never seen anything like that before.

Nice report decider..
the only note was the qq hand that ended up 4 way 3 all ins.
I was first to act on that hand and raised pre flop to a 1000 on a 100/200 blind. Mark is on qq and raises all in for about another 125 odd. The guy at the other end the calling station calls the all in and then i believe the 4th was a call on A10.
the flop came 8 9 10 rainbow giving me top set but a dangerous flop. The calling station raises and a10 and myself are put all in .
calling station turns over "6,7" giving him the low end striaght...on a pre flop raise of a 1000 and an all in he called with that
.
as i remember the j hits the board and gives mark the high end staright..which he deserved and i`m dead in the water anyway.
it was a real good pot and if you are gonna go out do it in blaze
throroughly enjoyed it...did ye sell any tables?

I was almost positive about the hands, just not the betting pre-flop. I knew mark was all-in pre-flop, but wasn't sure if he'd re-raised or started the betting. Weren't you holding JT and made 2 pair on the flop?

I spoke to a number of people who were interested, including the possibility of renting out a number of tables for future tournaments. If you are interested, or your friend wants one for his home game then let me know. He sounded keen last night, but don't know if he's still interested.
Cheers,

Good report, As I work in the Galsgow area quite a lot I was very interested in this, how many players entered (if already in the thread I apologise).
Dont like the 3.30 finish though need to work following day.

Yep, good report. Well done to the organisers too. Vote on the poll if you'd like to see more run like this as I will be presenting the results to my local Grosvenor card room manager.

Maroon I was in Cincinnati Club a few weeks ago for a Thursday night fiver rebuy, and it was very quiet.
Last night they were turning people away. Of course with the limited rebuy options, it also meant more cash games and SitNGos kicking off earlier. And more business at the bar too!
