Yes, 1970, at Binions Horseshoe.  It was held there every year until 2005 when it moved to the Rio, apart from the last 2 days of the ME.  Last year it was 100% held at the Rio.

Wikipedia says this.

Quote
The original World Series of Poker was started in 1969 by Tom Moore of San Antonio, Texas at the Holiday Hotel and Casino in Reno and was an invitational event. This inaugural event was won by Crandall Addington who went on to place eight times in the top ten of the World Series of Poker Main Event.

I think this event was very much downplayed by the Binions, who wanted their WSOP to be considered the Year Zero.

This may have effectively been the first World Championships, but it wasn't the first WSOP, it was the "Texas Gamblers Reunion". This is a source (amongst others) - http://www.pokerstrategy.org.uk/en/articles/130/

Its common knowledge that Binion was inspired by another event, but he created and started the first WSOP at the Horseshoe.  He also developed the knockout format used from 1971 onwards (the 1970 event being decided by ballot).

There's also a tale in folklore somewhere (not sure if its accurate or not) that the first ballot in the 1970 event resulted in every player voting for themselves.  Johnny Moss was allegedly elected as champion when the players were asked who the second best player was!
