If you have an infinite number of monkeys/typewriters/bananas, then your monkeys will produce all combinations of characters, so if your monkeys type one character a second, the number of seconds required would simply be the number of characters in the sonnet you're after

so let's say that the sonnet has 500 characters, does it mean that it will take only 500 seconds for infinitive numbers of monkey to type a sonnet?

No, it will take one second.  An infinite number of monkeys will be able to type the infinite number of combinations required in the first second.

Not if they're typing at one character a second, which is admittedly an arbitrary contraint I placed to make the explanation easier. There are infinte monkeys and infinite typewriters, but each monkey can't type infintely quickly.

just a thought - we'd work quicker if you put us at computer keyboards. We still havent got the hang of moving the bar back to the beginning of the next line when the bell pings! Wink

The monkeys are trained by giving them a banana everytime they make the bell ping, but only if they do it at the end of a full line of text.

The number of monkeys currently available for typing school is not infinite.
Neither is the number of any other creature on earth.
Therefore, you will have to type the sonnet yourself.

No one's doing any typing - you can print it off the internet.

OK i will repeat how long it will take a monkey - meaning one monkey to type out the sonnet.  So among the whole numbers of monkey in the trial, 1 will get it right.  So the time is finite, we might predict that.

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Now did anyone time me Huh?

If you're really really lucky, just under 30 seconds.

yes providing the monkey can type 16 characters per second.

I've never been able to accept infinity as a number and challenged this concept when I was much younger and a budding maths whizz. How can you have an infintinte number of monkeys when infinity is nothing more than a concept? If you are to accept an infintite number of moneys all on keyboards then they would finish the entire works immediately between them.
