I had a Bedford KB lorry with a 4 cylinder diesel engine. They used to call them coffee grinders, 55 mph flat out. so I unscrewed the governors on the fuel injector pump and fitted an overdrive gearbox. With these modifications it was capable of doing over 90 mph, but you needed 15 miles of clear road to get there.

My first car ( I started with 2 or 3 motorbikes) was a "Sit Up & Beg" 97E Ford Popular, vacuum operated windscreen wipers, 3 speed gearbox, you could stand inside the bonnet when working on it. VDT 645 was the reg. I forgot to put the handbrake on one day & it rolled away. I reported it stolen, lucky for me, as it hit 2 parked cars & demolished a garden wall, & that got blamed on the geezer who "stole it".....oops. Cost £65 to buy, the Third Party Fire & Theft Insurance was £7.

Next up was a powder blue Morris Miinor, reg 6667 MM. I confused the brake fluid - you could get Lockheed or ?, but if you used the wrong one & they mixed together in the brake pipes, the seals all rotted. Drum brakes all round, when they worked, after "pumping" them 8 or 9 times. The front offside kingpin(?) sheared in the end, & the front wheel went askew.

A Hillman Minx was next, well posh that was, XDT 645. Happy days.

In order, that was followed by a Hillman Avenger, GUC 945J, Ford Cortina Ghia 2.8i, Ford Capri 2.8, Rover SD1, Golf GT1, Rover 800, BMW 535, reg XHV 57 (best car I ever had), Toyota Celica, Honda Prelude (that had a most wonderful engine) then 5 or 6 Mercs, all anonymous, forgettable, though utterly reliable. Currently, I've got a lttle Beemer, which is really quite nice, has no "character" but trundles along pleasantly enough, & is incredibly economical on juice.

Cars are amazing these days. We used to have to "run in" new brakes & engines, service them every 3,000 miles, brake pads needed changing every 2 months, now they run for ever. Extraordinary.

the other brake fluid was Girling (before universal) and I suspect it was a draglink end that sheared off

Girling! That was it.

Draglink? Not sure. The front wheel wheel sort of went went wonky, but never fell off, all Morris Minors had the same problem.

My current car has done more miles than a space shuttle and had more hits than the Beatles but it runs like a dream.

Leons car is called Luey because his reg is LUY, they all have names!
