i was a new member on the site in question which i have not said which one ,,
NEW MEMBER
NEW EMAIL
NEW USER NAME
NEW ADDRESS
BUT STILLthis site said who i was i just dont know how this is possible unless someone from here checked my ip address and gave it to the other site who then put 2+2 together and come up with it being the same person.i dunno i might be wrong but its a bit fishy,a real good friend of mine who is 5-it hot on computers said this is only possible if someone gave my ip address to the other site....i just wanted conformation from this site if this is possible thanks...
OK here is a snippet from a weblog. As you can see it gives a fair amount of info.
In this case the location is relatively wide (Minneapolis) but in some cases it can be much more specific. i.e. if you were posting from a suburb of Newcastle it might say Newcastle, or it might say Jesmond.
So, knowing that, plus as other have pointed out, doing a bit of 2+2ing on things like subject matter, grammatical idiosyncracies, etc. its often not going to be difficult to work out who a 'new' poster actually is.
Also, note that if you are using a bog standard domestic Internet account, your IP address is probably dynamic i.e. your ISP allocates it from a pool of numbers each time you reconnect. This means the first part of it will stay the same, but the last 1 or 2 parts will vary each time you reconnect. e.g. if you reconnected three times, your numbers might be:
56.120.18.6
56.120.17.79
56.120.18.42
So nobody could definitely say who you were, but they could say(for example) it's someone on the NTL network who lives just west of Birmingham, uses Win XP and Firefox.
