What did you want to be when you was little???

When I was small I wanted to be a scientist.

first picked up a guitar aged 14 and from then on I was going to be a rock star. never anything else I wanted to be. friends and family told me I had to have a plan B but to be honest I think that's bad advice for a career path like rock star (or poker player, footballer, etc) some things require single minded approach. I got close a couple of times playing show case gigs or getting good press for what bands I was in were doing. finally 'retired' last year at the age of 32. decided I'd rather be a young poker player than an old guitarist. I still play and I hope my kids show an interest in music. my daughter is 6 and has her first guitar and my 18 mth boy is facinated when I play so maybe.

I always wanted to be a winger for Glasgow Rangers, but once i got a wee bit older and knew that was never gonna happen, i wanted to be a soldier. So i did! for 12 years!
I left 3 years ago, still miss it, but glad im out at the same time if that makes sense?

i dont recall wanting to be anything. all i knew was that i wanted to get a job after 5th year so i could support my family with some extra cash. thats what i did and fate and opportunity has brought me into a job i love, where caring for people is the core value. so maybe caring is what i intended all the time but just didnt know it.

I always quite liked the idea of being a nurse on a childrens ward,but money was tight when i was younger,so it was of to work for me at 16 not college.

I have never had dreams of doing a 'normal' job.  Ever since I have been old enough to talk, I have wanted to do something like be a racing driver or anything to do with competition. Even now, I tell people I am going to be a famous poker player one day  . Every one of my mates over the years have laughed at my career aspirations and took the piss in a friendly way from year to year as my goals change. I guess I have never really got past the dreaming phase as I get bored very easily and find myself day dreaming for large parts of the day when I am at the Prison ( Commonly called work by many people, lol ). It would kill me not to be able to dream, I am optimistic that if you want it enough then it may as well happen to you as anyone else.

I've thought about this some more - when I was young I wanted to be married and look after a house and have children. I couldn't have chosen a more different path!  I ain't no housekeeper!

I always had a fascination with maps, and the outdoors.

And during my high school years jumped between wanting to do Cartography or work in National parks as a Ranger.

Did neither. Figured that winters outside wouldnt suit me, and there was no way I wanted to go to College/University to study for another 3-4 years. So went out into the big wide world, and eventually ended up in the Casino industry, supervising Poker Competitions. Not a bad way to earn a living. i enjoy it. Can't wait to get back to it.

1) A  main-line Driver on the railway, like Dad, & Grandad.

2) A motorcycle racer, like Mike Hailwood, always wanted to do the Isle of Man TT.

3) Work in a Mars Bar Factory.

Failed on all 3 counts. Dad wanted me to have a "proper job", defined (by him) as a job where you had to wear a suit & tie. So I started off as an Apprentice Builders Merchant. Well exciting, eh?

I remember when I was very little I wanted to be a taxi driver.

There's a sort of bizarre 'little kid' logic at work when one considers dreams like this one. The sort of logic that, when you're small and obsessed with cars and driving, makes taxi driving seem like the best occupation in the world. You get to drive all day long, and people actually give you money for it! Not little money either, but the big money that grown-ups use, the paper stuff that we kids almost never see except at Christmas or birthdays. I mean, just think how many sweets and football stickers you could buy with all that!

Never occurred to me at the time to be, for example, a racing car driver. Nobody ever hands paper money to a race car driver, and besides, those things that go round the track don't even look like proper cars, really...

Can't believe I forgot the most ironic part of the story; I'm nearly 30 and still don't know how to drive.
