OK the river continuation bet was uncalled for, but I regret the way I played this. He figured his draw to the river was good at any cost, and hitting it cost me the tourney. Should I just have let him see it for cheap and if he failed tough luck, maybe betting 3000 on the turn? As it was I was out, should have been looking at 1st or 2nd, for 400 or 600 quid. As it was I walked out with 130, thanks to his outdraw.

To be honest I don't like this play at all.

You min- raise pre-flop with plenty people to act behind you and with a fairly marginal hand. (I would have preferred to limp with that)

You miss the flop..but instead of representing a pocket pair you bet out 2k, thereby knowing the guy is never going to pass that pot.

The turn hits and you scream "I've got the Jack!" (which he problably heard as "I'm scared of you!") by all of a sudden raising 16k (where as your flop bet was 2k)

His call on the turn was pretty poor IMO but he simply didn't believe you because you were soo inconsistent in your betting on this hand. If you had stuck in 10k on that flop he would surely have folded.

As it was I walked out with 130, thanks to his outdraw.

But by the same token you were lucky to outdraw him in the first place - you only had 3 outs on the turn, he had 15 outs on the river.

If you are going to raise UTG with a marginal hand then i would raise for more than just the minimum, possibly 2000 with 4000 or 5000, if someone reraises all in the i still have enough chips to lay the hand down.

If someone does call me and am first to speak then chances are i raise all in on the flop - if i'm going to put in a continuation bet then thats the only bet thats going to force them to pass. Your opponent will find it a lot harder to call now if he hasnt hit the flop. If he's sat there having slow played an overpair or having hit a set then fair enough he's going to get my chips but more often than not he's missed on a low raggedy rainbow flop and he can't call.
