i am trying to find out the make of my sound card so i can locate the drivers for it

i have opened up the base unit (first time in my 15 years of owning pc's) and the audio sockets plug into a silver box with foxconn written on it

foxconn being a big manufactor of all types of branded hardware

is there a better way to identify the card?

Try manually installing the drivers in system.
Google your PC model number?

Is the box with the sockets on a PCI card or attached directly to the motherboard?

if its an integrated device, chances are if you search for, and download the drivers for "ac97" soundcard, then this will get you fixed.
