Poker players must be in the top three, surely?

this is quite a good debate..but one that has been settled already. I remember this program being on in which different top class athletes performed athletic challenges; Footie players, Gymnasts, weightlifters, track and field and martial artists.
The gymnast won hands down....they are something else when at the top of their game

Gymnasts and boxers seem to approaching the all-round physical peak that the human body can achieve (IMHO).
Fitness is a different thing. Fitness is essentially being fit for a task. So a cruiserweight boxer might not be the best physical shape to run the 26 miles of a marathon - but I wouldn't fancy Haile Gebresselassie's chances in the ring with Clinton Woods.
Same goes for other events - rowers are incredibly fit, but rowers are big units. Not as big as sumo wrestlers though, and it could be argued that they too are 'fit' for their purpose - although I don't think athletic is an adjective you'd associate with them...
Overall though, I'm with Boldie - gymnasts and boxers (obviously in joint second after poker players)

Fitness is very specific to the sport, e.g. swimmers cannot run, runners cannot swim, boxers would be useless at cycling. But if I had to pick who train the most and have it toughest it would be boxers.

You can probably remove a lot of heavyweight boxers from that to be honest.

Remember the series Superstars. Alan Baxter crushed everyone at that and he finnished a really close 2nd the year before he won the event. The World version was won by Herman Maier and that included people such as Shane Mosely. Skiiers are fantastic atheletes all round. They are strong and have excellent stamina.

You'd pay to see it though.

I reckon Haile would want a fairly large ring, and might adopt an 'elusive' strategy. It wouldn't be a toe-to-toe clash.
Talking of big men, World's Strongest Man is on Five now. Big lads, throwing barrels about and lifting cars as easily as I lift a pint glass.
