phone scam?

just had a very odd couple of phone calls on my landline.  First was from a woman claiming to be from some company 'south africa somethingorother' - asked me if i would be prepared to hold whilie she put through a call from south africa.  I asked her who it was, and she said she didn't know, they had just asked to speak to whoever answered the phone.  I said no thank you, and hung up.  Couple of minutes later, another phone call, another woman.  Had a foreign sounding accent, but not south african. - Hi is that Marlene? - No, I think you have the wrong number.  - oh.  is that the picot (my old name) household?  - no, you've got the wrong number.

Anyway, not sure what was going here, but just being extra paranoid I suppose.  Am I right in thinking there's no way I could have incurred any nasty surprises to my phone bill as a result of these calls?

They could be re-reversing the reversed calls from a reversing box meaning they could be re-reversing the reversed call from right next door!! or the reserve the house the other side.
They could be looking for a way into your house right now!!
