My missus was bought a MP3 for christmas and wants to learn how to use a computer and start downloading music.
I have found a site called Blubster for her, but not sure if this is decent.
Can anyone offer some advice on free download sites

I use MIRC together with Autoget, this is excellent. A bit tricky at first, but no virusses', and most importantly no audit trail....

TBH as long as you have a wireless access point i imagine you'd be fine in court.
Just plead ignorance and see how they try and prove that it wasn't someone else hijacking your connection...

Your connection, your responsibilty. a quick scan of your computer for mp3's may be a give away www.mp3.com has lots of legal free music.

downloading copyrighted music for free is theft and IMHO should be treated the same way as if the thief had broken into the artists house and stolen money out f there safe

The big difference though is by breaking into the artists house and taking money they lose money.
By downloading a song they lose nothing, unless you assume that every download is a lost sale - even then it's more of a failure to gain.

music theft is a huge crime because it not only robs the artists of a sale but it also robs promising artists of a chance of a record deal

But the filesharing culture opens up so many more options for unheard of bands to promote themselves, and still offers plenty of chance to make money. The people with most to suffer are the big labels, and I have very little sympathy for them. They've treated consumers and they brought it all on themselves... This song from a favourite artist of mine kind of explains: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co8c246U4nw

the arctic monkeys spring to mind as a band whose success stemmed from fans sharing their songs online
however, i pretty much agree with you... i think nowadays fewer bands become/remain signed, and unfortunately it most affects the less-mainstream artistes
here is an interesting article http://www.brown.edu/Administration/News_Bureau/2003-04/03-008.html

I agree...I would never use a site like Morpheus (cough) to download music.
i do ssually find that, because my taste in music isn't for the popular stuff, I'll still buy the CD...free downloads just give me a sample..or I just need one more song which makes me buy the entire album.
