music theft is a huge crime because it not only robs the artists of a sale but it also robs promising artists of a chance of a record deal

There are quite a few acts whose music I have downloaded off the internet for free. I've liked what I've heard and have then become a fan of them and gone out and bought subsequent or previous albums.

Without downloading the original music I may never have got into the act and spent money on them.

In fact, it could be argued that it will now become more common for acts to get record deals precisely because people have been downloading their music for free, liking it, and telling others about it, thus alerting the big companies to their presence.

yep, It is actually proven that most people who download music for free through sites like morpheus and in the old days napster spend MORE money each month on music then people who don't.

I agree with that, since I discovered Napster by CD collection has grown massively. Most of it isn't put out by the majors however...

It's one of those crimes that's ok coz everyone does it.

I need to steal music, becasue if I payed for it, I wouldn't have enough left over for cannabis.

I take a sought of half way house approach to illegal downloading. I pay £9.95 a month to Napster which gives me the right to PLAY 99% of the music they host so long as it's just on my PC. Normally if you attempt to burn it to disc, Windows DRM thwarts you unless you pay for it. However, I've purchased a program called Replay Music which intercepts the music being sent to the sound card and converts it to an unprotected MP3 on the fly, which I can then use as and when I like.

Paying the £9.95 salves my conscience - and to be honest I don't download that much anyway.

yep...but it's really the 14YO's illegally downloading a single or two (or 20) that's screwing over the artists...really.
