O/T - army bullying

Not sure whether there is already a topic posted about this but i've just been reading about it in today's Sun. I have to admit i've not read the full article - i wimped out as the torment that the 19 year old private goes thru sounds horrific. The story reads:

"It brings fresh shame to the crack Royal Green Jackets infantry unit, which is already being probed over bullying allegations. The 19 year old private in the regiments 2nd Battalion, wearing a spurs shirt part of the time,"

I couldn't read any further - i hope the people responsible are brought to justice quickly to stamp this kind of torture out!!!

True - but a spurs shirt?!?!?!? What is today's society coming to when human beings can subject a fellow human to such degradation and humiliation?

I get the feeling this sort of thing is an 'accepted' part of Army life, part of the 'toughening up process', and has been going on for years and years.  The only difference nowadays is that more stories, and more importantly more footage, about it seem to be leaking out to the press.  I'm sure that not everyone goes through the extreme treatment that get reported but I'm sure that everyone goes through some sort of 'beasting' to some extent.  In outside circles it would be seen as bullying, but this is a totally different environment and not one I'm familiar with.

I'd be intrigued to hear what the ex-Army guys on here think of all this.  They can perhaps give the best perspective on it.
