My knowledge of cars is less than my knowledge of the Mongolian leather industry.
Basically I know nowt.
We need to buy a second hand car, and basically we have narrowed it down to an 04 Peugot 307 diesel estate (36,000 miles) or and 01 BMW 320sed diesel estate (65,000 miles).
My gut feeling (for no particualr reason) is to go for the BMW, whereas Kat prefers the Peugot.
Can anyone who knows anything about cars give a little bit of advice? Areas we are particularly concered with are safety and reliability.
Any opinions greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
Keith

If the BMW is in decent nick then that would be my pick. I have a '96 318is petrol with 125k on the clock and still going strong. The diesel should go forever.

Definately go for the beemer. Peugeots will run til a certain point then EVERYTHING will go wrong with it. Anything german will go forever. Especially the diesel estate as its designed to be a long haul mule. KingPoker

Do second hand garages usually offer a warranty?
The garage selling the BMW is offering a 3 month guarantee. Seems a bit short to me.
How much should I try to haggle? It's on offer at £8,950.
Sorry for being so clueless.

I always try to get atleast a years warranty out of it...Most garages will haggle on that. and ALWAYS haggle on a second hand car..If you don't get the extra warranty (which is worth a fair bob) you will probably get 450 off atleast at most garages. Also have a look on autotrader to see what your car goes for at others..that way you can give yourself a ball park figure.

Definately stretch them to over 6 months or more. Usually any major problems should become apparent within that time. The price is right for that year give ot take 500 quid. Most dealers will offer 12 months. Tell him that.

mileage seems lowish for the year for a diesel. check the history, owners, where the dealer got it from. has he had a vehicle mileage check done. If so get him to show you the certificate. Full Service history? you don't have to buy the first car you see, take a few BMW diesels out for test drives get an idea of what they should feel like. HPI or Experian clear? Get him to show you what they have on the car.
I think I could drive a 60K Peugeot and a 120K one and feel the difference. Very possible that I couldn't with a BMW. Check the history! Then worry about getting a monkey or whatever off the price.

The warranty is effectively worthless.
My general advice is buy Japanese for reliability. But I'd generally put German reliability above French.

Tell him you have 2 more to look at, say your wife doesn't like BMW's. Offer to buy on the spot if he will accept £8k, but assure him that this is your final offer. Be prepaired to walk away. (you can always come back) If you don't get it for £8250 I will be amazed.
