When I was a financial journalist I got loads of calls from people who had been scammed - and soem of them incredibly intelligent guys who should have known better.

It was unbelievable - but human nature makes us think 'what if' which is why we sometimes call the bet on the river even though we know when they turn their cards over we almost definitely beat. We always want to believe in miracles.

Speaking of scams like this, I had a phonecall earlier in the week from a local solicitor asking if I could help him. His website had been copied wholesale, with a few small changes, by some chinese scammers and put online with a very similar domain name. There were then using it to try and make their standard lottery scam seem more legitamate - you're dealing with reputable, established solicitors after all. And it works! He's been getting phone calls from all around the world from people who've sent money to the "shanghai office" and want to know when they're getting their millions.

The sad fact is he's been trying to get them shut down for many months with no luck, and even now there is nothing we can do to quickly shut them down Sad

Using the same phone number for the scam for at least a year - surely that's very traceable?

I know they seem to try and target the old and those that may not be a full shilling but surely nobody is daft enough to fall for it.

I'm also amazed that anyone falls for things like this but someone i know once bought a hoover for the best part of £2000 because of the spiel of the bloke doing the home demo, playing mostly on the filter system etc, after finding out there kids had asthma, gullible i think so.
With all these unsolicited emails lets face it a quick search on google normally sorts it out.

Don't worry, it was noted.

Wow, never knew that. I thought 07 was a mobile or one of these personalised numbers. No wonder they make money through this as how many people would just ring the number to complain about the letter. Money for old rope, bad that nobody stops this sort of thing.
