I appreciate that the format has to fit with the time slot of the TV show, but an extra 30-60 minutes durration to the length of the tourney from
tweaking the blind structure a bit would make the more exciting latter stages much less of a crapshoot
.
I know this has been mentioned in other threads a few times previously but I think if a method could be worked out to slow down the last stages of the tourney that it would be much more enjoyable and attract more people (no point until the maximum number of players is raised beyond 600)
Starting an hour or so earlier and slowing down the blinds would give the production crew a chance to pick the select hands (by select I mean normal play for a lot of them including hands which don't always go to the river) which could be shown in the first part of the show. I know the reason against this has been stated that there is a chance the studio guests would be out of the tourney before the TV show has even started, but to be honest now that I have been watching the show for a long while I am only interested in the guests play when they progress further into the competition.
Maybe if they do go out early their hands could be shown prior to letting us know they were out, that way we would not be expecting the hand shown to end up with them losing and might actually prove to be more interesting as a viewer. (just dont implement any such crazy ideas prior to the end of july when I am on a winners night as a guest!)
Let's face it, the guests on the show seem to be playing a smaller and smaller part more recently and more focus is rightly placed on the hand analysis
so maybe this format wouldn't have as much of a negative effect on the show as it previosuly would have.
So good points here.
Just want to re-( re-re- ? ) reiterate the idea on slowing down the blinds towards the last few tables. It's always good to see the FT last at least a little while. That, added to hand on hand action ( !? )
would give us, at least an idea, of who is a lucky donk, & who is at least semi-skilled.
Ok scrap my previous ideas then if it would leave me exposed as a lucky donk! I don't want my donk tactics revealed lol.
I like the idea you put forward of having one really special guest. This could maybe be them entering the tourny if it starts an hour befor the show goes out then so be it. Chances are that a good player would still be in by the time it goes to air. If they are out then they could assist more actively with hand analysis like action jackson did on primo night.
I think people would much prefer to see someone they know as a top player instead of minor celebs (as most guests tend to be). Obviously I exclude all blondites from this comment as they are all major poker icons!
Maybe keep winners night once a week as this gives the punters a good feeling of involvment, most of the blondes who have been guests would still have a route onto the show this way. Get rid of guests all together as Claw suggests on most nights, with the budget (are they payed by way of used pairs of Tikays socks?!) being spent for the week on a sunday or primo night on a higher calibre of guest.
As exciting as it may be to watch people going all in on the last few tables because of the blind structure with mediocre hands the final tables would have much better poker played at them if the tourny started an hour or so earlier with slower blinds.

Having guests with personalities is more important for entertainment vaule than winners nights tbh. Most aint got owt to say or contribute.
Sky clearly want a donk fest tourney and people entertained not to be acutally informed by a skilled player

Possibly a controversial suggestion, but I actually think the show would work better without studio guests. Maybe I'm wrong, but (unless it's someone we know) I can't imagine people tune in just because of the draw of the 'celebrities'. The time spent chatting to the guests and reviewing their hands etc could be better spent, I feel, on the analysis of the game. The door would also be left open then for the games to start an hour or so before the show broadcasts, allowing for either a slower structure towards the end of the games, as some have suggested, or for a larger field of players.
I assume that the 'celebrity' guests are meant to bring non-poker playing viewers into the web of addiction. If 'er from Hollyoaks plays the game, well I'll give it a go, sort of idea.
I've always had the feeling that Sky wants to appeal to non players first, and satisfy existing players second.
As long as it brings more & more people into the game, it can't be a bad thing. But I must admit, having a kiddies tv presenter on
could
possibly be aiming at the wrong age group. Next week on Jeremy Kyle - Tikay taught my 3 year old never to chase a gutshot. How the hell am I meant to beat him now ?

I see you are clearly referencing moi.
Seriously though, I do accept peoples varying views on the show, hell, even I have to admit that the structure leaves little room for what players call "Proper poker", but Sky are aiming for a different demographic to the regular players.
"The Open" is intended as a fun, introduction to poker, for players who want to learn, maybe improve their game and have an evenings entertainment for the price of a couple of pints. The analysis provided by some experts is excellent, and to be honest, the standard of play has improved since it began, and possibly seeing what the other guy had in a hand you were involved in can reinforce a new players decision process when they see they made a good read and great laydown.
Sky also want this to be a community, we all see the same people playing and with the introduction of the live events, they are being given the oppotunity to meet their online opponents and possibly make new friends.
"The Open" may not be perfect, but then, when have we players ever completely agreed on any comp ?
Just accept the show for what it is and for what it is trying to do.

No I didn't mean you )
How can you learn to play poker when its a crabshoot after 20mins? I accept the opens like that I don't play it, but it would be nice and beneficial to sky poker to have at least 1 MTT a night, non-televised to have a decent non-donkfest structure.

I object, strongly, & take offence at that comment.
Sometimes it IS right to chase a Gutshot. Bring the lad up right, I say. Parents, huh!

I think that may well be the best solution. The open is obviously working in it's current format (although I prefered the older 1500 stack with slower blinds) and is consistantly brining in new players which is probably Sky's aim. With the Open bringing in new players, they may wish at a later date go and play in a slower structure non televised event (maybe the top 10 finishers could be namechecked like velocity used to).
A few more higher buy in MTT's wouldnt go amiss. All these £1.20, £3.30 etc entry can be fun but there is not much scope for winning much. I guess we all have other sites of course for other things and maybe Sky knows this and is not trying to compete for a reason.

Turn over? With your 'bain in the arse' gag there were dead comedians turning over in their graves.

I was simply paying tribute to the comedians of yesteryear, you know, like the Eighties...

Thanks for all the notes. My perspective on the guests (and we prefer calling them guests rather than celebrities) is, yes, they illustrate a mix of skills, abilities and backgrounds and represent players of all levels who might be watching and can empathise with a bad beat, or a first time go at The Open, and so on.
Generally, the guests have been good talkers and have contributed to the fun side of the show - to try and offer a balance between analysis and the more light hearted side of the game. I think most of the guests have done a great job, whether they are a genuine name or not. I also think the players have been a great asset to the show. And nearly everyone wants to come back.
Action was a great guest but we also get comments that truly good players scareoff the less confident newbie. But we'll see more like him in weeks to come.
Just to let you know, I've passed on a lot of comments - both positive and negative - to the Sky Poker team, and you may see some of your sage advice being implemented in coming weeks.
Good luck to everyone travelling to Birmingham. Sorry I can't be there, I'm on a stake-out in Fort Lauderdale.
