Tournament Set-up Question

I teach at a school in Glasgow and on the 16th of March, the school is having an activities afternoon to raise money for Red Nose Day. There are a bunch of things, quizes, games etc, but a few 5th and 6th years started talking and approached some teachers about having a poker tournament. I was asked by one of the teachers if I would be interested. UMMMMMMM, yes I am. The deal is that we all pay 5 pound, 3 pound going to Red Nose Day, with the other 2 pound from each player towards prizes for those who place (that way we are not playing for money but prizes)

So basically, there are 20 players (3 teachers and 17 students) and we would start playing at about 1:30. The day ends at 3:30 and we could go a few minutes past that, but I would like to end around then.

So, what structure do we go with? Starting stacks, blinds, length of levels, how much time for a player to make a decision etc.

I dont want 3:30 to come and have 9 players left or have it done by 3:00 and it be too soon.

Anyone have any experience in a tourney that short?

I can get whatever I need. I have some chips and the other teachers have some as well. Shouldnt be a problem

You are setting up a poker tournament so that 15 and 16 year old kids can gamble in school.

The local papers will have a field day.

they are 17 and a few are 18 i think there is also 3 16 year olds playing

we are raising money for red nose day with no money being won. i think its ok

It doesn't matter what you think, it's a matter of how bad can it made to look by a desperate hack.

These kids are not old enough to go to a casino to play and you want them to play with their own money in school. It's probably illegal without the age of the klds being considered.

Most people do not see a difference between poker and any other form of gambling, and why should they?

This sort of thing just fuels the arguements put forward by anti-gambling lobby.

was not my idea. I was approached by others who had been approached by the kids themselves.

The headmistress, to my knowledge has not approved it yet, I am simply looking for a chips/ blinds / time that will work.

I see poker as a game and obviously there is money involved, but any game can be played with money. Pool, basketball etc. I understand what you are saying, but I think that be using 60% of the money for charity and 40% to buy prizes, I truly see no reason why it should not go ahead.

as far as what a third party ie papers etc would think, I have no idea, but based on what my school spends on supply teachers, teachers aides, exam people from the SQA, poker would be the last of my worries

Dont knock it - running my own casino for nearly 6 months during my 4th year at a very well known private school used to make me a fortune. At one point they estimated nearly half the schools 1400 pupils had played in it at some point.

I would have gotten expelled as well but thankfully 3 sixth formers had been caught smoking cannabis the week before and it made the front page of the Manchester Evening News - the school didnt want anymore adverse publicity and so i got two consecutive saturday morning detentions.

The casino in the classroom idea all started because they have a charities fortnight event at the school to raise money for charity, i decided to open a casino and gave the proceedes of the first two weeks to charity. Once i realized how much could be made decided to carry on "playing for just tiddlywinks" during breaks and lunch - teachers never saw money change hands and robert was my fathers brother.

true..and yet it would all be a tremendous amount of bollox by the anti-gambling PC brigade.

Assuming you have 10 players to a table and want 2  (maybe 2.5?) hours play. I would think have the linds go up after x amount of hands. start at 25-50 (each 1500 chips so 30k total) and move them up a level every 10 hands (or 15 minutes).Just double them everytime. 

25-50 for 15 mins
50-10 for 15 mins

you could add a 75-150 for 15 min (otherwise people will complain but I would go

100-200 for 15 min
150-300 for 15 minutes

That's the first hour and in a fun atmosphere I am sure you will already be down to about 12 players, probably the smokers

200-400 for 15 mins
300-600 for 15 mins
400-800 for 15 minutes
500-1000 for 15 minutes
and finally
1000 and 2000 for the last run.

Best of luck to you I reckon the above way is a bit of fun and could maybe overrun by about 15minutes or so but what the hell.. it's for charity (and to create some new poker players)

and when they've all enjoyed it so much just tell them all they have to do is pinch borrow mummys credit card when she's not looking, download the pokerstars software, make a deposit and find which ever tourney i happen to be playing in.

Daddy wont mind because the $200 deposit is far less than mummy would spend on a normal saturday down the retail park.......
