If you drive it without tax - you aren't insured.  Big no no.

Really?  I could be wrong but I'm almost certain thats not the case.

You try making an insurance claim without your road tax.  They won't pay.

think you will find out its making a claim without a valid MOT not tax but as M says- you prob know best.

car gets smashed, gets taken to approved bodyshop, bodyshop give estimate to insurers, insurers say OK do, bodyshop fix car, customer signs to say they did a good job, insurers pay bodyshop.

Where does road tax come into it?

I'd get it taxed ASAP, if the MOT has run out you'll need that to get it taxed.  But you need to do it as soon as possible.

Where does it say in law if you have no road tax your not insured

M

Wasn't talking about the law - I was talking about the insurance policy and if they'd pay out on a claim.  If I'm wrong on this, I hold my hands up.

i would imagine if u sold a 20k bmw to someone with no tax on it you would probably be best knowing if insurance is still valid. only a thought.

Plenty of people buy £20K BMWs and don't know what the indicators are for...

So we agree Road tax has nothing to do with insurance.

And some BMW drivers aren't very good at indicating. However you should be courteous
to BMW Drivers at all times.

A valid MOT is required for your insurance.  Check your policy.  Therefore driving without a valid MOT will mean your insurance policy is not valid - meaning you're driving without insurance.

I picked my car up from Southampton docks (straight of the boat from Japan)... it had no MOT, it had no number plates - it was not even registered in this country - however, I did have insurance.

I explained the situation to the insurance company, they covered me using the chassis no as an identifier.

Yes, you should have an MOT to drive on the road... BUT, insurance companies never ask to see it, even in the event of a claim.

Well for the fella who asked the initial question, his lack of road tax would be an impediment to his insurance, as he'll need to get his tax to get his MOT.  Without his MOT he wouldn't be insured.

But OK, if are insured without tax, you're insured without tax.

Oh, and a lot of BMW drivers deserve no courtesy at all.  I did see one of those special edition ones yesterday though.  It had indicators and a rear-view mirror.  Grin

LOL - that's what I meant.    Although technically it's illegal to drive without tax, so to get your MOT done, you'll need your tax.

What I said about BMW drivers still stands...

Going back a bit, I got a lovely 6 month sailing trip around the balkans conflict courtesy of her majesty.
4 months into the trip I received 2 letters, one a fine for not having in date car tax on my car.
The other letter was a fine for not showing a valid car tax disc in my car window.
I wrote back explaining my situation, they replied saying that I should have ensured I had enough tax to cover my tour of duty, also I had committed 2 different offences thereby deserving 2 seperate fines.
Also if another policeman spotted my car before I returned I would probably receive another 2 fines.
To top it off the vigilant coppers who successfully curtailed my life in crime failed to stop my car being vandalised 3 times during that trip.

I love civil servants.

All joking aside, driving a car withoit Insurance is one of those things that might seem smart to some at the time. Until they knock someone over.

And big thanks for the advivce on here from MPower. He sells Beemers.
