The living conditions and treatment of factory farmed animals is appalling and should definitely be exposed.  Although what you see will not include the more severe cruelty.  If only enough people would make a stand and demand better living conditions for the animals they eat, in exchange for paying a little more.  The meat industry would be forced to meet consumer demands and the standard of meat would be better, as well as a better quality of life for the animals…   It breaks my heart…

I made a point of watching some of these, cos I eat meat, and love animals. The view I always used to take was that If we didn't farm cows, sheep, pigs etc ,they would not exist.
After watching this though, I think I wish, for there own sakes they didn't.

I spoke to a food scientist,a few months ago,she said It is within our power now, to 'grow' and 'shape'  our protien requirment, in the lab and to extend the process to allow for new foods that meet our food needs.

This would have to be done at the expence of the farming industry, and could only succeed, with full public acceptance of a new way of protien provision.

I would sign up tomorrow, cos our meat supplies are processed to a degree that makes the term "Farm Animal" redundant.

So its up to you folks, let the boffins 'grow' our requirments. or continue with this butchery.........literalily.

Im brought up in the proper hill farming country of mid wales where we farm purely to breed livestock. They are farm animals that they are showing in the programme on BBC 3 they live in the sheds and outside for their first 2 years (cattle now) and then off as we say 'down the road'. These animals are all cared for and they are raised from birth with the upmost care and attention as the programme shows, if they werent and were mistreated then it would show in the meat and the farmer would not get the optimum price for it. This obviously applies to all farm animals now where care is given. On our farm, it is now lambing time and the lambs are coming thick and fast. We travel up there 4 times within a full day, 5.30am, 12,pm, 6pm and 12.00 am to make sure the ewes are not struggling and are given birth as they should be. If they arent we send for the vet and he does what he can regardless of the cost as you have to keep your quota of sheep. If one dies you must replace it. And the same applies for the cows. We are not unique, this is how everydoes must and does treat their livestock and it must be said we look after our hundreds/thousands of sheep as a whole better than a lot of city slickers look after their 1 cat or dog.
Then when they head down the road to market/slaughter we know that they will die in the most peaceful way possible as again it does not pay for the animal to be stressed as the release of adrenalin will ruin the colour and taste of the meat decreasing its price when sold to the supermarket chains.
Everything from their birth to their demise is done is the most precautious manner to conserve the price and quality of the animal so i must argue that these animals have a better life than a lot of poor humans have in the developing countries!.If the general public cared about those people as much as farmers care about their animals then the world would be a much healthier place!
Sorry for the rant but it does annoy me when people talk about this meat production being called cruelty to animals when it clearly isnt/or couldnt even be if it wanted to!!!
For goodness sake, EU regualtions state even a veal calf gets more room being transported to slaughter, than a human does nin an economy class seat on a long haul flight!!!!!

Kingpoker your post suggests that this is the norm for all animals used for meat.  This is clearly wrong and a world apart from factory farmed animals.

Cows, lambs and pigs arent factory farmed. Only animals like chickens, turkeys etc can be said to be factory farmed!

It is true that EU regualtions state that when calves are being transported through countries on long haul they have to be contained in an individual box with a minimum size. Dont quite see how stating the law makes me deluisonal but each to their own hey!

Cows, pigs and sheep are factory farmed.  We don’t have enough pasture land to allow all livestock access to a life your animals have for the short time they are allowed to live!  http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming.asp
You were using the example of veal to suggest that animals used and killed for meat are cared for.  Using the specific example of space is astonishing, as we all know veal calves  are raised in crates that restrict physical movement, to minimise the growth of muscle.  Was that intended as a joke?

Questian, Why do veal calfs need to be transported half way across the continant anyway.......................surely their "down the road" expierance, should be a little closer to home.

Eric Im pretty sure the production of veal is banned in this country.  These by-products of the dairy industry have no use other than as veal and so we export them to countries where their sad existence is allowed...

There is nothing funny about this.
My point was that the animals such as proper beef cattle, lambs and pigs have to be raised properly especially in the UK!
Are you the serious one? Do you honestly think our sheep and cattle dont have enough pasture! Do you have any idea of how a farm actually works and not just what you have read on a website! Do you think a cow eats all the grass on the farm then starves after that. If there wasnt enough pasture why are there 1000's and 1000's of acres of grass let down pembrokeshire, devon, etc for farmers around here to send their sheep for the summer. Why do we have lorries and lorries of hay being delivered to us and surrounding farmers each year if it wasnt sustainable. How come our sheep and cattle anrent malnourished. And why have i got 2 buckets of salt lick in my car if not the fact to provide supplements for the mothers to provide higher nutritional value milk for thier lambs!
You obviously live in a very media surrounded world if you think any of my reasons for sustainable rearing are 'delusional'.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to sustain the lives of sheep and cattle each and every year and do you think if we didnt eat meat then these animals would flourish, they would not be there at all.

And sorry eric just to clarify yes it is illegal in this country, we dont produce veal. We only sell cows 2 years old or more.

Indeed Kingpoker, this is my point. It is the vegaterian pascall's dilema...............the land will be deviod of cattle sheep pigs etc unless they are farmed, but as they are only bred to be farmed,(they would not exist otherwise,) thats the only reason for them being here.

But as I said earlier, the pointlessness of their lives, that is, only existing to provide sustinunce for us, means they would be better off not having lived at all.

I am a meat eater, and anmal lover, and regret the meaningless of these beasts lives
