Anyone heard much about this film? Reckon it's any good? Empire gave it 5 stars, but they have been known to get overly excited about actors/directors/films they idolise. Remember the Phantom Menace review?

Anyhow, I'm a big fan of Lynch and was just wondering if anyone knew any more...

Just wiki'd this and noone seems to have a clue what the hell this is about!!!!!
It seems to be an almalgimation of 5 other projects he has been working on over the years and simply put them togther, not really a decent start. Arty farty types will like it coz its out there but never ever gonna pull in the norms!

If you dig Lynch especially Mulholland Dr. then you will love this film.  I think it helped me understand Mulholland a bit more or at least pointed out some of the stuff I missed.

But essentially its a typical Lynch film, simple idea, simply story, well cast but told by him, in his own way which lets be honest is a little screwed up.

Think I am deciding I am not a Lynch fan.

Saw a review on TV, Rossy maybe, saying even Lynch took it too far this time. Saw Mullholland Drive a couple of times, mostly for the    acting   , what a great movie, the script, the dialogue, the way he handled the characterization and the subtle unfolding of multiple layers. Still don't have a ******* clue what any of it was about. But did anyone?

It's incredible that you liked the movie without fully understanding it. I was the same, but perhaps that is why he is so successful. He uses powerful imagery and alluring notions to reel you in - the fact that you can be captivated by something you can't fathom is quite fascinating.

Inland Empire is the same, but like Mulholland Drive, you will be thinking about it in the car journey home, trying to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together. Personally, I am a big fan of abstract narrative and surrealism in films, I prefer to be challenged by cinema rather than simply spoon fed. If you want to sit back and be handed your entertainment on a plate for 120 minutes, then something like 300 is probably the film for you. There's nothing wrong with that, in fact, I am very much looking forward to seeing that film, it's just that the two methods target different wants. It really depends what mood I'm in.

I must confess to thinking at times, "Even Lynch has gone too far this time", but I must also admit to contemplating the film way after I exited the cinema, and even browsed the Internet to find out what it was about. I think the very fact that there's an entire forum devoted to its discussion speaks volumes. I spent hours reading all the thoughts and opinions highlighted on there, and each comment I read clarified the success of the film, confirming that it made people think, which is often the key aim for a film like that. It's up for interpretation and, personally, I'm all for that.

Finally, I have never seen such a 'marmite' film. This is genuinely one you will either love or hate. If you're not a Lynch fan, then don't waste your time, because you'll deteste it with a passion. However, whether you're a Lynchite or not, the end credit sequence is class, but I don't think you'd fancy paying the entrance fee just for the last 5 minutes.

well put, snoopy, my sentiments entirely. I love the type of film you describe, most others I find boring unless they are very funny or very skillfully express some condition or emotion, which I think is best done in an abstract or surreal way anyway. I recently saw 'World Trade Center', which had none of these things, I felt like 'why even make this movie, why waste people's time like this?'
Other films of the ilk that I love and will watch again are:

Vanilla Sky/Abre los Ojos (original), I know a lot of people hate it though.
The Machinist, one of my all time favourites, pure abstraction
Solaris (Clooney version), amazing film.
