During the Second World War, German counterfeits posed a
major threat, the German Government’s intention being to
destabilise sterling. By 1943 the German Government were
producing some 500,000 counterfeit “British” notes a month.
Most were not released, but were captured by the advancing allied
forces. However, significant numbers found their way into
circulation and were a constant headache for the Bank and other
financial institutions for years to come. To counter the problem
the Bank introduced a metal thread for the first time, and in 1943
it stopped issuing all denominations above £5 and withdrew
notes of these denominations (including £100, £500 and £1,000
notes) from circulation. The £10, £20 and £50 denominations
were reintroduced in 1964, 1970 and 1981 respectively.

So there's your answer, because they haven't been arsed yet.

Would £100 notes not help the economy, encourage folk to spend more? Is there any downside?

What would we do with £100 notes? They look at you like you're Ronnie Biggs if you try to change a £50.

In Ilkeston, where I live, many shops will not accept £50 notes, & those that do give me seriously dodgy looks!

I suppose higher denomination notes makes it easier for dodgy gambling dens and drug traffikers to operate.

Indeed. Most people never even see £50 notes.

I'm still not sure how they get into circulation, given that you can't get them out of cashpoint machines. I think this is the reason why many people think there's something inherently dodgy about them.

The €500 note which Laz showed us is, in my opinion, the best banknote in the world, as decent amounts of cash can be carried without big bulky wads, though it's a bit of a bummer if you lose them. I had to take €30,000 to Monte Carlo last year, to buy in 3 players, & it was only possible, in practical terms, to take €500's. (I asked my local Natwest bank if they had any €'s in stock, & they gave me all they had - €250 worth....)

The REAL reason we do not have a £100 note actually stems from what has been learned about the €500 note - it rapidly became the most counterfeited note in the world. It is, I imagine, for the same reason that the US don't permit bigger than a $100 bill.
