My Norton anti-virus has just run out a few days ago, and I'm just wondering if the free stuff is trustworthy.

Or do I have to fork out another forty sovs. to be secure ?

I'm not a fan of Norton at all.

I'd recommend NOD32, which is about £27 a year.

I've never used the free ones so I can't comment, but many people do and are happy so I'm sure someone will have a recommendation.

i use nortons it is system hungrey but its secure

but its like mircosoft as the brand leader its the favourite for hackers to attack

personal AV isnt something i would use a freeware version of as i want a team working on new attacks before they happen rather than a couple of days after

I use EZ Antivirus, it's simple, it's effective and it's free.

Somethings wrong with my google, i looked up "jungle tunes from the 90s" and went into loads of the sites that the list populated.

On one my computer starting running slowly all sorts of pop ups from other online record stores popped up and my avg kept popping up: threat detected: heal, send to vault ect, i kept pressing heal and then came out of the site but yesterday i googled sky tv and totesport and both times instead of taking me to the site it took me to some dodgy search engine.

I ran a full scan on my computer and it detected nothing and said my computer was clean so whats wrong with my search engine and how can i rectify this?

I'd advise downloadng the free Nod32 trial and redownloading it once the 30 days is up.

I 2nd avast as a good choice. I think AVG is rubbish, it missed several viruses.

You can go to trend micro's website and run their in browser scan called housecall. Trend micro are the forefront of AV.. they supply network AV systems to large corporations and such. Their online scan takes a while but is very good. You can use it to check up on your free AV, obviously you don't have a real time monitor when using their online scanner but it depends how many suspect files you are downloading and such. For a long time I just visited the housecall site regularly with no annoying, bloated anti-virus software installed. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_frame.asp

Avast just runs in the background, no pop-ups unless it finds something. It has options for instant messaging, p2p, email, etc and they are easy to turn off if you don't want them. The only pop-up it does is when it downlaods a new virus database, reassuring for some and you can turn that off easily too.

Avast is free, you need to register to get a code so that you can use it for a year, this is just a case of inputting your name and email address. Then copy and past the code from the email into avast.

Free is good.

IMHO the AVG free anti virus is by far the best out there and has no impact on your systems performance, unlike Norton. Trend Micro was the first anti virus I had on my first PC but it let a virus through undetected and I lost all my data.
