What's the story with this guy? Some him last night on the ammmazing 'Bad Boys of Poker' and still can't work the guy out. Is he mad? Is he a genius? I know he just got lucky a couple of times, but some of those calls! 'Well, I've just got 10 high, so I guess there's no way I can fold (for my whole stack)'. gus is a mathematically genius
he thinks he is getting 2-1 for a hand he was expecting to be 6-4 dog in
he would have worked out exactly what sort of hands he was against and what the odds were that he was against 2 overs or against an overpair etc etc
gus doesnt mind making sick calls if he thinks he is making a +ev play in the long run
or so i once read from harry d (i think)

I think you're right, Ironside.
He's doing a lot of staring into the distance but I think his attention is on Esfandiari a LOT, even at 'there's no way I'm going to fold', ruling out overpairs and maybe narrowing down to small middle pair at that point. The earlier 'stick to backgammon' and 'go back to Denmark' comments probably fuelled his desire to bust the guy if possible...

Yes and no, the more money the guy has the less any prize really bothers him, it's more about the poker and the people. He wasn't throwing chips around at the heads up stage, a lot of very solid folds. Maybe the free advertising is worth more to him though  |

His backgammon background (which is highly maths orientated) has led to him seeing poker alot different to other players. He will quite happily make calls which appears odd which are based around equity. Also there are metagame reasons for all of this are you going to try and steal Gus's big blind when you seen him in high profile events calling all ins with 10 high i think not, also when he does get a hand he gets paid.
One of the best tournament players worldwide IMO and gets a bad rap as a pure luckbox.

He took 2 mins to call my all in and said I know i'm behind
3handed I push with A5, he calls with q9 60/40 and hits the 9
what i didn't understand was why call 80% of your chips with a marginal hand even if I was the most dangerous out of the 3
He certainly seems luckier than most

It depends, a salad bowl with yummy cucumber is a very interesting salad bowl indeed. I agree though, GH is a lot more interesting to watch |
