Hi guys,

Me and my friend are embarking on our first trip to Vegas and to the WSOP, we intend to stay for 2 weeks, play a prelim event, and the MTT satellite in the hope of qualifying for the main event.

As of course we may not qualify for the main event we may also want to play smaller buy in events on the strip, so I wondered if people would recommend staying near the Rio in a hotel such as the Gold Coast, or staying in the Strip and making the trip to the Rio for the WSOP stuff, I have no idea how far it is and how much cab fares would be, plus how hard it is to get cabs when Vegas is so buzzing with the WSOP.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

No problem getting taxis. Remember that the WSOP takes place in Vegas in the middle of summer, when general visitors to Vegas are not at their peak (too hot for regular holiday people). An extra 10,000 poker players for the main event is a drop in the ocean.

From the Rio to the Strip (Caesar's/Bellagio junction) is only half a mile, plus there's a free bus shuttle from the Rio to the other Harrah's casinos if you don't feel like paying $10 for a taxi.

Staying in the Rio is handy for the Main Event, but to better experience Vegas earlier than that I'd stay on the Strip and 'commute' to the Rio.

Dalzini,

With regards to where to stay... it really depends on whether price is an issue? If you are plan on sharing a room then obviously the costs come down considerably.

I stayed at the Gold Coast last year (because price was an issue!!) and I was very happy with it... indeed I'm doing the same again this year.

It's about a 300yd walk from the GC to the Rio... and then twice that distance once inside the Rio to get to the WSOP area!!

As AndrewT said getting to and from the strip is not problem, or expensive. As well as the free shuttle from the Rio, there is also a free shuttle between the GC and Barbary Coast (at the junction of Flamingo and the Strip)... a taxi from the GC to the Venetian was about $8... there are a steady stream of taxis in and out of the hotels.

You have to rember that Vegas is used to catering for tens of thousands of conventioners at any one time... even the 10000 or so poker players arriving for the Main Event is no big thing for Vegas... the WSOP is just something that happens in a few rooms at the back of the Rio, the rest of Vegas just carries on as normal (not sure normal and Vegas belong in the same sentence??)

Take a look at - http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=36.114659~-115.172907&style=h&lvl=16&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=5085497 - I found this tool excellent for 'finding my way around' before my visit.

Pan left along E Flamingo Rd to find the Rio, GC and the Palms.

Hope this helps,
Alan

Thanks for the in depth replies from both of you, we definately would prefer a cheaper option and the gold coast is what we had planned, by the sounds of it it seems a good economic choice, I am sure only our suitcases will be enjoying the room anyhow!

I will check out the link, may even see you at the gold coast Alan

Cheers

If you intend to be there for the Main Event, then I doubt our paths will cross (unless I get lucky between now and then!!)... I will be there 20th - 28th June.
